Three α-herpesviruses are known to be associated with central nervous system (CNS) infection; however, there are limited data on the incidence and clinical characteristics of α-herpesviruses CNS infections. This study aimed to assess the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and outcomes in patients with human herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), human herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) CNS infections. We identified cases of HSV-1, HSV-2, and VZV CNS infections and reviewed their clinical and laboratory characteristics. ⋯ CSF white blood cell counts were significantly lower in patients infected with HSV-1 (117 × 106 cells/L) than in patients infected with VZV (301 × 106 cells/L) (P = .008). These 3 herpesviruses are important causes of CNS infections regardless of immunologic status. HSV-1 infection was commonly associated with encephalitis and poor prognosis; HSV-2 and VZV CNS infections were associated with a low risk of mortality and neurological sequelae.

Visual impairment due to refractive errors and color vision deficiency (CVD) can affect the visual abilities of workers in workplace. Identifying the prevalence of common visual problems helps us to prevent and treat occupational ocular problems. This study was conducted on 2600 males referring from companies for a routine medical exam to Occupational Medicine Center. ⋯ In comparison with normal subjects, CVD had no significant effect on refractive findings of our subjects (P > .05). Our data present the prevalence of refractive errors and color blindness among Iranian industry-workers. Compared with other studies, our subjects have a lower prevalence of refractive errors, and similar rate of prevalence of color blindness.

Early and appropriate antenatal care (ANC) is key for the effectiveness of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We evaluated the importance of ANC visits and related service costs for women receiving option B+ to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV in Tanzania. A cost analysis from a health care sector perspective was conducted using routine data of 2224 pregnant women newly diagnosed with HIV who gave birth between August 2014 and May 2016 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. ⋯ The potential cost-saving was 2.2 US$ per woman at ≥4 visits (84.8 US$) compared to <4 visits (87.0 US$), mainly due to less defaulter tracing. Most pregnant women living with HIV in Dar es Salaam initiated ANC late and >40% failed to adhere to the recommended minimum of 4 visits. Improved ANC attendance would likely lead to fewer HIV-infected infants and reduce both short and long-term health care costs due to less spending on defaulter tracing and future treatment costs for the children.

Postoperative bile leakage caused by intrahepatic duct injury during right hemicolectomy: A case report.
Bile peritonitis is one of the rare complications that can occur after cholecystectomy or hepatectomy. It is associated with high mortality, prolonged hospital stay, and increased cost. We herein report 2 cases of bile leakage as a postoperative complication of right hemicolectomy. ⋯ Although very rare, bile leakage due to intrahepatic duct injury can occur after right hemicolectomy in patients with a history of cholecystectomy and intrahepatic duct dilatation. It is necessary to consider the possibility of bile duct injury and anastomotic leakage if bile leakage is suspected after right hemicolectomy.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have a reduced cross-sectional area (CSA) of small pulmonary vessels and decreased pulmonary function test (PFT) indexes. This study investigated the value of small pulmonary vessel CSA in diagnosing and evaluating the severity of COPD and its correlation with PFT. This retrospective case-control study included patients with COPD who underwent multi-slice spiral computed tomography (CT) between March 2015 and December 2018. ⋯ Both %CSA <5 and %CSA5-10 were positively correlated with all PFT indexes (r = 0.180-0.462, all P < .05). CSA was positively correlated with PFT. Analysis of small pulmonary vessel CSA based on CT images contributes to diagnosing and assessing the severity of COPD.
