Sarcopenia, characterized by a decline of skeletal muscle mass, has emerged as an important prognostic factor for cancer patients. Trunk computed tomography (CT) is a commonly used modality for assessment of cancer disease extent and treatment outcome. CT images can also be used to analyze the skeletal muscle mass filtered by the appropriate range of Hounsfield scale. ⋯ The efficacies of the proposed methodology based on w/ and w/o data augmentation and different feature maps are compared in the experiments. We show that the Jaccard score is approximately 95.0% based on the proposed data augmentation method with only 16 feature maps used in U-Net. The stability and efficiency of the proposed U-Net are verified in the experiments in a cross-validation manner.

Diagnosing influenza in children aged 5 years and under can be challenging because of their difficulty in verbalizing symptoms. This study aimed to explore the value of the triage heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and temperature, either alone or when combined with individual symptoms and signs, in predicting influenza infection in this age group. This was a retrospective study covering 4 influenza seasons from 2017 to 2019 in an emergency department (ED) in Hong Kong. ⋯ The linear discriminant analysis model had a high specificity of 92.5%, but the sensitivity (18.3%) was too low for clinical use. Triage HR, RR, and temperature had limited value in the diagnosis of influenza in children ≤5 years of age in the ED. Fever and cough and/or rhinitis symptoms had a better diagnostic performance than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention influenza-like illness criteria in predicting influenza in this age group.

In south China, traditional herbal medicines have been widely used as functional foods or dietary supplements for daily health care. Many plant-derived chemical substances with biological activity are inadvertently ingested by collegiate athletes daily through canton-style herbal tea or herbal slow-cooked soup. In the view of the complexity of herbal ingredients, it is still no full survey reported for the sports risk of plant-derived sports doping. ⋯ It was first found that collegiate athletes resorted to some traditional herbal materials to protect their health care that there were regional differences (P < .01). Collegiate athletes with Health Fitness and Traditional Wushu as their sports expertise showed a higher frequency of recognition or ingestion in the use of traditional herbal materials (P < .01), while their different living types and cuisine preferences did not seem to be associated with the ingestion frequency of traditional herbal materials. In addition, in the view of the significant differences in the use of herbal preparations to relieve sports stress among young athletes in different regions (P < .01), the findings strongly suggested that athletes should strictly control their use of various herbal preparations during sports training and competition, including herbal wines, herbal oils, topical plasters, analgesic tablets.

Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is a fatal complication of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with a poor prognosis. Osimertinib is a promising option for NSCLC with LM harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation. However, therapeutic approaches remain a challenge for osimertinib resistant NSCLCs with LM. Although studies have reported that the first/second-generation EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors were active against osimertinib-resistant NSCLC with EGFR C797S and sensitive mutation (SM), the resistance inevitably occurred due to the development of the EGFR SM/C797S/T790M triple mutations. ⋯ LM is a fatal complication of advanced NSCLC with a poor prognosis. NGS profiling of CSF circulating tumor DNA is important in NSCLC patients with LM and erotinib plus bevacizumab and chemotherapy is a promising option for patients with LM harboring EGFR C797S/SM.

The pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection is so complex that have not been clearly defined, despite intensive efforts have been made by many researchers. MicroRNA (miRNA) as regulation factor in various human diseases may influence the course of HIV-1 infection by targeting mRNAs. Thus, studies combining transcription of posttranscriptional miRNA regulation are required. ⋯ In our study, a set of integrated methods was generated to identify important regulators and miRNA-TF-mRNA interactions. Parallel profiling analysis of the miRNAs and mRNAs expression of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients after antiretroviral therapy indicated that some regulators have wide impact on gene regulation and that these regulatory elements may bear significant implications on the underlying molecular mechanism and pathogenesis of AIDS occurrence.
