Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second commonest retinal vascular pathology, with macular edema (ME) as one of its major complications, which could finally cause vision loss. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF therapy), as the standard therapy, has an unsustainable effect and needs repeated injections, which associates with frequent adverse events and significant economic burden. We reported a patient who had developed RVO and ME, and finally recovered after electroacupuncture treatment. ⋯ Electroacupuncture might be effective in alleviating the symptoms of hemi-RVO-associated ME, with a potential of long-lasting effect. The frequency of anti-VEGF therapy could be reduced to the most extent, and the possibility of recurrence could be reduced as well, resulting good economic benefits.

Aloe ferox is one of the most widely used medicinal plants today, with the most intense detoxifying action of all aloe species, being used in the treatment of various diseases, including obesity. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of Aloe ferox in obesity treatment. ⋯ The administration of Aloe ferox to obese patients has been shown to achieve a significant reduction in body weight, BMI, LDLc, and FBG. These effects may be due to the laxative and detoxifying action of Aloe ferox components. As it can only be administered for limited periods due to side effects, further experimental and human studies of the efficacy of this plant in the treatment of obesity are needed.

The aim of this study was to construct a nomogram for predicting prostate cancer (PCa) in patients with PSA ≤ 20 ng/mL at initial biopsy. The patients with PSA ≤ 20 ng/mL who underwent prostate biopsy were retrospectively included in this study. The nomogram was developed based on predictors for PCa, which were assessed by multivariable logistic regression analysis. ⋯ Calibration plots and DCA further validated its discrimination and potential clinical benefits. Applying the cut-off value of 15%, our nomogram would avoid 42.5% of unnecessary biopsies while miss only 4.4% of PCa patients. The nomogram provided high predictive accuracy for PCa in patients with PSA ≤ 20 ng/mL at initial biopsy, which could be used to avoid the unnecessary biopsies in clinical practice.

Epidemiology of Meckel's diverticulum: A nationwide population-based study in Taiwan: Characteristics of the cases from surgery between 1996 and 2013.
The diverse presentation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a diagnostic challenge for clinicians and most previous studies consist of single institutional case series. The aim of this study was to review the related diagnoses of MD and to investigate the epidemiological characteristics using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We conducted an observational study using a population-based database. ⋯ Among the symptomatic MD patients, intestinal obstruction was present in 583 (48%), acute appendicitis was present in 464 (38%), and gastrointestinal bleeding was present in 283 (23%) patients. Intestinal obstruction was the most common preoperative diagnosis in the 0 to 10 years and >20 years' age groups, and acute appendicitis (acute abdominal pain) was the most common diagnosis in the 11 to 20 years' age group. This population-based 18 years' epidemiologic study described the distributions of MD symptoms among different age groups, which may help clinicians gain a better understanding of this diagnostically challenging gastrointestinal anomaly.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by an inflammatory process that affects mainly synovial tissue in joints, and by the production of cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP) antibodies. In the inflammatory process the regulation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) transcription factor activation is a key point in the production of inflammatory cytokines. On the other hand, polymorphisms in several genes could contribute to the promotion of the inflammatory process observed in RA, and the association of the rs28362491 polymorphism in the NFkB gene with RA has been studied in different population. ⋯ The following clinical variables were also determined: anti-CCP levels, Disease Activity Score, and Spanish version of the Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability-Index. Although no association of the polymorphism as a risk/protection factor with RA was found, the RA patients who carried the Ins/Ins genotype showed higher anti-CCP levels, while those with the Del/Del genotype showed higher Spanish version of the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index levels, compared to the other genotypes. The NFkB -94 Ins/Del ATTG (rs28362491) polymorphism is, therefore, associated with higher levels of anti-CCP antibodies, though no significant association as a risk or protection factor in RA cases was identified.
