Case Reports
Effects of intraocular treatments for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) retinitis: A case report.
Intraocular infection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may cause severe visual loss. However, it is relatively rare, and there is no consensus on its treatment. ⋯ The retinal infiltration may have involved EBV infection to the retinal neurons but also EBV-free reactive inflammatory cells. EBV infection to the neurons may have been, at least partially, treated by intravitreal foscarnet treatment, and the reactive inflammatory cells by intravitreal MTX. Further observations are warranted to reach a consensus on treating intraocular EBV infection.

Genetic polymorphisms of plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 can affect various tumors including gastro-intestinal, sexual hormone sensitive cancers and lymphoma. Accumulated evidence have shown that plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 acts as an oncogene and tumor suppressor in various cancers. In fact, the rs13255292 and rs2608053 single nucleotide polymorphisms of plasmacytoma variant translocation 1are known to affect lymphoma; however, their effects on gastric cancer are primarily unknown. ⋯ The dominant model (CT + TT) of rs2608053 was related to a decreased risk of gastric cancer in male T3 + T4 (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.33 - 0.98, P = .042) and stage III gastric cancer subgroups (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.27 - 0.89, P = .020) compared to the CC genotype. The rs13255292 and rs2608053 single nucleotide polymorphisms in plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 may contribute to susceptibility of gastric cancer. Further studies with more subjects and different ethnic groups are needed to validate our results.

Despite the continuous advancement of liver cancer diagnosis technology and level, there are still nearly two-thirds of patients with primary liver cancer that are already advanced at the time of diagnosis. Ultrasound-guided microwave ablation, as a palliative treatment for intermediate and advanced liver cancer, is currently recognized internationally Standard treatment for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. However, recently, some scholars hold that ultrasound-guided microwave ablation does not guarantee complete inactivation of tumor lesions. ⋯ At present, there are no good treatment options for intermediate and advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, there is a strong demand to explore the individualized multidisciplinary combined treatment model based on ultrasound-guided microwave ablation.

Endovascular treatment for acute basilar artery occlusion via persistent primitive hypoglossal artery: A case report.
Although their effectiveness and safety have not yet been established, endovascular treatments have recently been applied in the treatment of acute basilar artery occlusion. If not identified, persistent primitive hypoglossal artery, a rare variant of the posterior circulation, could be a barrier to the successful treatment of basilar artery occlusion. ⋯ This is a rare case of basilar artery occlusion that was successfully treated with mechanical thrombectomy through persistent primitive hypoglossal artery. It is important to consider the potential clinical implications of this rare vascular variant.

Observational Study
Emergency air evacuation of patients with acute respiratory failure due to SARS-CoV-2 from Mayotte to Reunion Island.
In February 2021, an explosion of cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia overwhelmed the only hospital in Mayotte. To report a case series of patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) due to SARS-CoV-2 who were evacuated by air from Mayotte to Reunion Island. This retrospective observational study evaluated all consecutive patients with ARF due to SARS-CoV-2 who were evacuated by air from Mayotte Hospital to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Félix Guyon University Hospital in Reunion Island between February 2, and March 5, 2021. ⋯ In cases of ARF due to SARS-CoV-2 requiring emergency air evacuation, sedated patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation and curare should be prioritized over nonintubated patients. It is noteworthy that patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia related to the 501Y. V2 variant were very severe despite their young age.
