The Chinese government is attaching great importance to the development of ambulatory surgery in order to optimize the healthcare system in China. The study aims to examine the complications and quality indicators of patients who underwent gynecological ambulatory surgery at a tertiary hospital in China. This was a retrospective study of patients who underwent ambulatory surgery between July and September 2019 at the Department of Gynecology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University. ⋯ Compared with conventional hysteroscopic resection of uterine lesions, ambulatory hysteroscopic surgery had a shorter hospital stay and lower total costs (P < .05) but similar surgery-related costs. Ambulatory gynecological surgery is feasible in China, with an acceptable complication profile and obvious economic and social benefits. Nevertheless, hospital management shall be reinforced.

The most common site for metastasis in patients with breast cancer is the bone. In this case series, we investigated patients whose surgical and medical treatment for primary breast cancer was conducted at our center and first disease recurrence was limited to only 1 bone. We analyzed 910 breast cancer patients, 863 had no metastasis and 47 cases had a single bone metastasis ≥ 6 months after their first diagnosis. ⋯ In conclusion, the risk of developing single bone metastasis is likely in non-metastatic patients with Stage III tumors and possibly in mixed type tumors. Knowing this risk, especially in patients with mixed type tumors, may be instrumental in taking measures with different adjuvant therapies in future studies. Among these, treatment modalities such as prolonged hormone therapy and addition of bisphosphonates to the adjuvant treatments of stage III and mixed breast cancer patients may be considered.

Although venous thromboembolism (VTE) is relatively rare after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) can be fatal. Whether routine thromboprophylaxis or thrombolytic treatment is necessary for patients undergoing UKA remains unclear. Here, we present a case of delayed pulmonary embolism after UKA. ⋯ We presented an unusual case of delayed pulmonary embolism after UKA. Despite the low incidence, its life-threatening nature makes it imperative for surgeons to be well-informed about thrombosis and pay more attention to its prevention strategies.

This study examined the different demands for overseas liver transplantation between genders and roles from the perspective of overseas liver transplant recipients and primary caregivers. An exploratory qualitative method was employed using a purposive sample of individuals who had received overseas liver transplantation. We recruited 28 recipients and 29 family members from a leading hospital in Taiwan. ⋯ Most female primary caregivers would engage in the health care task but needed more medical personnel, assistance, and high emotional support from relatives. This study revealed the common and urgent demands of overseas liver transplant recipients and primary caregivers. The unique demands of recipients and primary caregivers based on their gender and roles were rooted in the potential influences of traditional cultures and modern medicine in an ethnic-Chinese society.

This study aimed to examine whether marginal sinus placenta previa, defined as when the marginal sinus just reaches the internal cervical os and placental parenchyma might be >2 cm from the internal cervical os, can be diagnosed using ultrasonography (US). We identified the placenta previa cases that underwent both US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between April 2010 and December 2018 at our institution. The diagnostic discrepancies for marginal sinus placenta previa between US and MRI were examined retrospectively. ⋯ A change in US diagnosis occurred in 10 (35.7%) cases, all of which were diagnosed with low-lying placenta previa or marginal placenta previa and did not develop any serious miserable obstetrical outcomes. In conclusion, the diagnostic accuracy of US for detecting marginal sinus placenta previa was not significant. MRI examination may be required to accurately categorize the types of placenta previa.
