Although venous thromboembolism (VTE) is relatively rare after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) can be fatal. Whether routine thromboprophylaxis or thrombolytic treatment is necessary for patients undergoing UKA remains unclear. Here, we present a case of delayed pulmonary embolism after UKA. ⋯ We presented an unusual case of delayed pulmonary embolism after UKA. Despite the low incidence, its life-threatening nature makes it imperative for surgeons to be well-informed about thrombosis and pay more attention to its prevention strategies.

This study aimed to examine whether marginal sinus placenta previa, defined as when the marginal sinus just reaches the internal cervical os and placental parenchyma might be >2 cm from the internal cervical os, can be diagnosed using ultrasonography (US). We identified the placenta previa cases that underwent both US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between April 2010 and December 2018 at our institution. The diagnostic discrepancies for marginal sinus placenta previa between US and MRI were examined retrospectively. ⋯ A change in US diagnosis occurred in 10 (35.7%) cases, all of which were diagnosed with low-lying placenta previa or marginal placenta previa and did not develop any serious miserable obstetrical outcomes. In conclusion, the diagnostic accuracy of US for detecting marginal sinus placenta previa was not significant. MRI examination may be required to accurately categorize the types of placenta previa.

Retrospective study of relationship between vastus medialis volume on SPECT-CT and outcome of unilateral total knee arthroplasty.
Although the importance of quadriceps femoris function was reported previously, little is known about volume-related factors and their effects on clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We sought to determine whether there was a bilateral difference in vastus medialis muscle volume measured on single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) in patients who underwent unilateral TKA. We also aimed to determine whether vastus medialis volume was related to osteoarthritis (OA) severity or scintigraphic uptake degree around the knee joint on SPECT-CT. ⋯ However, a decreased vastus medialis muscle volume was related to worse clinical outcomes after TKA (P = .045), whereas the degree of scintigraphic uptake on SPECT-CT was not associated with postoperative clinical outcomes. Muscle volume of vastus medialis was decreased in the operated knee than in the nonoperated knee, and that was correlated with worse postoperative results. Even if the preoperative volume of vastus medialis were not related to OA severity on conventional radiographs and scintigraphic uptake on SPECT-CT, preservation and improvement of the muscle mass of the knee undergoing TKA is important.

Natural changes of traumatic vertebral compression fractures during the first 6 months in patients visiting for disability certificates: A retrospective observational study.
To identify the natural changes of traumatic vertebral compression fractures during the first six months in patients visiting for disability certificates after conservative treatment. Data of patients who visited the rehabilitation medicine department of a university hospital for disability certificates concerning traumatic vertebral compression fractures from 2015 to 2018 were reviewed. Those who visited 180 to 210 days after injuries were included, and those who received invasive procedures for compression fractures were excluded. ⋯ Thoracic and lumbar compression fractures showed similar changes. Traumatic vertebral compression fractures change significantly during the first six months. This study could warrant 6 months of waiting for issuance of disability certificates for patients with traumatic vertebral compression fractures.

We investigated the association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and rs2014355 variant in the gene, short-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase (ACADS) based on exercise habits. Data collected between 2008 and 2015 for individuals aged 30 to 70 years were available in the Taiwan Biobank (TWB) database. Backward stepwise linear regression was used to evaluate the associations of rs2014355 and exercise with HDL-C levels. ⋯ Multivariate analyses showed significant association between TC+CC genotype and HDL-C in the exercise (β = 1.09785; P value = .0146) compared to the no-exercise group (β = -0.03754, P = .9154). In summary, the association between HDL-C and exercise differed significantly with respect to ACADS rs2014355 genotypes. Compared to the TT genotype, the TC+CC genotype together with exercise was associated with higher levels of HDL-C.
