South Asian region has been experiencing the increasing burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) primarily due to over and irrational prescribing of antibiotics. Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are the leading cause of out-patients' visits in the region. Despite commonly known viral aetiology, ARI is the single largest reason for antibiotic prescriptions contributing the exponential growth of AMR in the region. Collated data on antibiotic consumption for ARI at outpatients and resistance pattern of respiratory pathogen are lacking in the region. ⋯ registration no: CRD42018116658.

Dental pain can have a detrimental effect on quality of life. Symptomatic apical periodontitis is the most common cause of dental pain and arise from an inflamed or necrotic dental pulp. There is growing evidence to support the effectiveness of probiotics in combination with antibiotics on periodontitis. Seizure-like movements caused by residual sevoflurane inside the anesthesia machine: A case report.
Sevoflurane-induced seizures are most often caused by high concentrations of sevoflurane during anesthesia induction. However, in this case, we found a rare case of seizure-like movements caused by residual sevoflurane inside the anesthesia machine. Therefore, we propose that the detection of residual anesthesia-inhaled drugs should be included in pre-anesthesia checkout procedures. ⋯ The check-up procedure of residual anesthesia-inhaled drugs inside the anesthesia machine should be included in the checkout design guidelines, or else the washout procedure should be performed in the pre-anesthesia checkout procedures.

Diabetes mellitus risk after hysterectomy: A population-based retrospective cohort study.
We explored whether hysterectomy with or without bilateral oophorectomy was associated with the increasing incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in an East Asian population. This was a retrospective population-based cohort study that analyzed DM risk in Taiwanese women, using a health insurance research database of 1998 to 2013 containing nearly 1 million people. We identified 7088 women aged 30 to 49 years who had undergone hysterectomy with or without oophorectomy. ⋯ Our study provides essential and novel evidence for the association between hysterectomy and DM risk in women aged 30 to 49 years, which is relevant to these women and their physicians. Physicians should be aware of the increased DM risk associated with hysterectomy and take this into consideration when evaluating a patient for a hysterectomy. The current results might help gynecologists prevent DM and encourage diagnostic and preventive interventions in appropriate patients.

Cortical anatomy plasticity in cases of cervical spondylotic myelopathy associated with decompression surgery: A strobe-compliant study of structural magnetic resonance imaging.
Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), we studied cortical gray matter volume changes in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) before and after cervical cord surgical decompression. We then discussed the structural damage mechanisms and the neural plasticity mechanisms involved in postsurgical CSM. Forty-five presurgical CSM patients, 41 of the same group followed-up 6 months after decompression surgery and 45 normal controls (NC) matched for age, sex and level of education underwent high-resolution 3-dimensional T1-weighted scans by 3.0 T MR. ⋯ Postsurgical CSM patients had significantly lower gray matter volume in the left caudate nucleus but greater regional gray matter volume in the right inferior temporal gyrus, the right middle orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the bilateral lingual gyrus / precuneus /posterior cingulate cortex than did NC. Abnormal areas gray volume in presurgical CSM and postsurgical CSM patients showed no significant correlation with clinical data (P > .05). Myelopathy in the cervical cord may cause chronic cerebral structural damage before and after the decompression stage, markedly in outlier brain regions involving motor execution/control, vision processing and the default mode network and in areas associated with brain compensatory plasticity to reverse downstream spinal cord compression and respond to spinal cord surgical decompression.
