A five-gene signature for predicting overall survival of esophagus adenocarcinoma.
Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is common and aggressive with increasing trend of incidence. Urgent need for an effective signature to assess EAC prognosis and facilitate tailored treatment is required. Differentially expressed mRNAs (DEMs) were identified by analyzing EAC tissues and adjacent normal samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). ⋯ Patients were divided into low- and high-risk groups based on risk scores of the signature. The high-risk group was mainly associated with cancer-related pathways and low levels of B cell infiltration. The 5-mRNA prognostic signature we identified can reliably predict prognosis and facilitate individualized treatment decisions for EAC patients.

The Griffiths Mental Development Scale-Chinese (GDS-C) is used in China to assess the development of children from birth to 8 years of age. Language disorders are a common symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and global developmental delay (GDD)/intellectual disability (ID). There is a need to identify distinct clinical characteristics in children suspected of having these 2 disorders, mainly presenting as language disorders. ⋯ The developmental imbalance of subscales within the ASD and GDD/ID groups identified troughs in the personal-social, language, and practical reasoning areas in children with ASD and in the language and practical reasoning areas in children with GDD/ID relative to typical children. The GDS-C is a useful, comprehensive tool for the assessment of the developmental state of children with ASD and GDD/ID. Characteristics of practical reasoning subscale help diagnose autism in >36 to 60 months old children.

Low family income is a risk factor for child maltreatment. However, there has been no comparative study on the association between child maltreatment and family income. The objective of this study was to investigate the physical health and emotional and behavioral problems of maltreated children according to the economic status of their family. ⋯ Physical health problems (7 of 8 items) occurred more often in the NBLG group, and behavioral problems (6 of 17 items) occurred more often in the non-NBLG group. Children in Korea who are maltreated have different physical health, emotional, and behavioral problems depending on their family income level. These results can be useful in approaching the recognition of and interventions for child maltreatment.

Systemic inflammatory response to non-surgical treatment in hypertensive patients with periodontal infection.
Hypertension is associated with chronic inflammation in the tissues and organs that are involved in the regulation of arterial pressure, such as kidneys and blood vessels. Periodontal disease affects systemic inflammatory markers, leading to endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerotic plaque instability, dyslipidaemia, and insulin resistance. These conditions can also cause an increase in the blood pressure. ⋯ Cytokines that reflected a statistically significant difference included Interleukin-1β and endothelial vascular growth factor (P = .04 and P = .004). Hypertensive patients with periodontitis undergoing non-surgical periodontal treatment exhibited a decrease in proinflammatory cytokine levels. Non-surgical periodontal treatment decreases the levels of systemic proinflammatory cytokines in controlled hypertensive patients.

STROBE-sequencing analysis of the vaginal microecology of 4- to 6-year-old girls in Southwest China.
We investigated the vaginal flora diversity of preschool-aged (ie, 4-6-year-old) girls in southwest China. Fourteen preschool-aged girls were enrolled in this study. The statuses and differences in their vaginal flora were evaluated by Gram staining, bacterial culturing, and sequencing analysis. ⋯ The functional abundance heat map indicated that the bacterial functions increased with age. The vaginal microecology of preschool-aged girls differs from that of adults. A comprehensive understanding of the vaginal flora diversity of preschool-aged girls will aid in clinically diagnosing vulvovaginitis in preschool-aged girls.
