The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly spread to other countries, causing numerous deaths and challenges for organizations and health professionals. Diet and nutrition invariably influence the competence of the immune system and determine the risk and severity of infections. Studies have already been published on the relationships through which vitamins C and D can mitigate the severity of infections such as COVID-19. In this context, this protocol describes a systematic review intended to analyze if vitamin C and D supplementation can reduce the severity of Covid-19. ⋯ CRD42021255763.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the use of a posterior interosseous artery (PIA) flap and an anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap for post-traumatic, medium-sized soft tissue reconstruction of the hand based on flap characteristics, postoperative complications, and aesthetic outcomes. From October, 2010 to March, 2016, 62 patients undergoing soft tissue reconstruction of the hand with 30 PIA flaps and 32 ALT flaps were included in this study. The 62 patients were divided into the PIA flap group and the ALT flap group. ⋯ However, the operative time (136 min vs 229 min) and aesthetic outcomes (flap bulk swelling, 0 cases vs 31 cases) were statistically significantly different. Both the pedicled PIA flap and the free ALT flap were comparable for the reconstruction of post-traumatic, medium-sized soft tissue defects of the hand according to the evaluated outcomes of postoperative complications. Based on the surgical characteristics of the flap and the evaluation of aesthetic outcomes, the pedicled PIA flap was significantly superior to the free ALT flap.

Valid estimates of cancer treatment costs are import for priority setting, but few studies have examined costs of multiple cancers in the same setting. We performed a retrospective population-based registry study to evaluate phase-specific (initial, continuing, and terminal phase) direct medical costs and lifetime costs for 13 cancers and all cancers combined in Norway. Mean monthly cancer attributable costs were estimated using nationwide activity data from all Norwegian hospitals. ⋯ The scenario analyses indicate that future cancer costs are highly dependent on future cancer incidence, changes in death risk, and cancer-specific unit costs. Gender- and cancer-specific estimates of treatment costs are important for assessing equity of care and to better understand resource consumption associated with different cancers. Cancers with an intermediate prognosis (50%-70% 5-year relative survival) are associated with higher direct medical costs than those with relatively good or poor prognosis.

There was a controversy for the electrocardiogram (ECG) changes and their relationship with disease severity in old patients with acute cerebral ischemic stroke (CIS). This study was aim to provide referential data for this topic. Totally 200 old patients with acute CIS in our hospital from January 2017 to December 2019 were included into this study. ⋯ There were statistically significant differences of myocardial ischemic ST-T segment changes among different disease severity, infarct size and prognosis of acute CIS patients (P < .05). The ischemic ST-T segment changes of ECG reflected that the disease severity, and more ECG abnormalities indicated more severe pathological conditions in CIS patients. The characteristics of ischemic ST-T segment changes have important reference value in the evaluation of severity and prognosis of acute CIS in old patients.

Severe hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is still a common complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which affects the quality of life of patients, and may even cause kidney failure. This study reports the clinical effect of adjuvant treatment of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) on severe refractory HC after of reduced intensity conditioning haplotype high-dose peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (RIC-PBSCT) in one case. ⋯ ADSCs adjuvant treatment of relapsed and refractory severe HC is safe and reliable with good clinical efficacy. It shows certain clinical application value, which however requires more clinical cases to further verify this.
