Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is an undesirable complication in patients undergoing general anesthesia. Combination therapy via different mechanisms of action for antiemetic prophylaxis has been warranted for effective treatment of PONV. This study was designed to compare the prophylactic antiemetic effect between midazolam combined with palonosetron (group MP) and palonosetron alone (group P) after laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgeries. ⋯ In the prevention of PONV, midazolam combined with palonosetron, administered during induction of anesthesia was more effective as compared to palonosetron alone.

There is an increasing concern about the impact of bracing on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, up to now, few multidimensional questionnaires on this impact are available in China. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of Brace Questionnaire (C-BrQ). ⋯ Satisfactory internal consistency was found in all the C-BrQ domains. Most C-BrQ and C-SRS-22 domains showed satisfactory correlation coefficients, except when vitality and school activity in C-BrQ were compared with self-image, mental health, and management satisfaction in C-SRS -22, respectively. C-BrQ is reliable in evaluating the QoL of AIS patients receiving brace treatment.

A comparison of quality of life between patients with small and large gastric remnant volumes after gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
The impact of gastric remnant volumes (GRVs) after gastrectomy on patients' quality of life (QOL) has not yet been clarified. The aim of the present study was to compare QOL after gastrectomy between small and large gastric remnant volume patients. We prospectively collected clinical data from 78 consecutive patients who underwent distal gastrectomy with Billroth II gastrojejunostomy for gastric cancer. ⋯ There was no difference in the STO22 score except for dysphagia between the S and L groups after gastrectomy (P > .05). The QOL score of dysphagia was different at postoperative 6 months (S vs L, 12.4 vs 22.8, P < .03), but there was no difference at postoperative months 1, 3, 12, 24, or 36 (P > .05). The remnant gastric volume after partial gastrectomy affects neither functional differences nor QOL after 6 months following appropriate radical surgery.

Early diagnosis as well as treatment is important in management of congenital muscular torticollis (CMT). The purpose of this study was to find an effective physical therapy modality to improve the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle thickness, the ratio of the SCM muscle thickness on the affected side to that on the non-affected side (A/N ratio), and head rotation in infant under 3 months of age diagnosed with CMT. ⋯ Passive stretching treatment was more effective than other treatments of this study for improvement in degree of head rotation in CMT infants under 3 months of age.

To explore the diagnostic value of computed tomography (CT) imaging for duodenal lipoma and the potential clinical significance of the findings. ⋯ CT was an effective, non-invasive method for diagnosis of duodenal lipoma. CT imaging could clearly discern location, size, shape, and nature of duodenal lipomas. Duodenal lipoma can be associated with digestive tract inflammatory diseases and tumors in different locations, and its diagnosis is potentially valuable for their prevention and treatment.
