To develop a new prognostic model for the overall survival of patients with clear cell metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) using Korean Renal Cancer Study Group (KRoCS) database and compared it with 2 renowned prognostic models: the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and the international metastatic renal cell carcinoma database consortium (IMDC) models. Data of 790 patients diagnosed with mRCC and receiving targeted therapy as their first-line treatment were pooled to this study. Data from 4 hospitals (n = 619) were used to develop the new model and those from other 5 hospitals (n = 171) were used for external validation. ⋯ KRoCS ranked the first in all 3 statistical parameters including akaike information criterion (AIC), concordance index and generalized R2 among other prognostic models. We developed the KRoCS model and validated it externally with demonstrating its superiority over MSKCC and IMDC models. The KRoCS model can provide useful information for counseling patients with clear cell mRCC regarding life-expectancy.

Despite the increasing prevalence of spinal surgery in super-elderly (SE) patients, the outcomes and complication rates have not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes and complications of lumbar spinal fusion for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS) in SE patients aged 80 years and over with those in patients aged 65 years and over, and under 80 years. This study analyzed 160 patients who underwent spinal fusion for DLSS between January 2011 and November 2019. ⋯ Overall early and late complications were not significantly different between the groups; however postoperative delirium was more common in group SE than group E (P = .027). SE status was the only risk factor for postoperative delirium with odds ratio of 3.4 (P = .018). Spinal fusion surgery is considerable treatment to improve the quality of life of SE patients with DLSS, however careful perioperative management is needed to prevent postoperative delirium.

The purpose of the study was to compare the operation time, the fracture healed time, the postoperative function recovery between the techniques that temporary locking of the interphalangeal joint and traditional manual reduction in the treatment of percutaneous pinning of the phalanx fractures. ⋯ Both surgical techniques can enable patients to achieve good function, but the technique of interphalangeal joint locked is effective in the treatment of the phalanx fractures, as it is characterized by short operations and a quick recovery. However, this technique is only suitable for extra-articular phalanx fractures that the AO/ASIF classification of type A2.3 and less than 2 weeks, not for other phalanx fractures.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) disease outbreak was a public health emergency of international concern which eventually evolved into a pandemic. Nigeria was locked down in March, 2020 as the country battled to contain the spread of the disease. By August 2020, phase-by-phase easing of the lockdown was commenced and university students will soon return for academic activities. ⋯ In general, the epidemiological attributes of the pandemic from the original data and the forecast data indicated optimism in the decrease in the rate of infection and death in the future. Moreover, the infection rate, prevalence and death rate in January 2021 coincided with the predictions based on the analysis. Therefore, the Nigerian government is encouraged to allow universities in the country to reopen while university administrators set up the necessary protocols for strict adherence to safety measures.

This study aimed to investigate the expression and clinical significance of aurora B kinase (AURKB) gene in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) by collecting relevant data in Oncomine database. Firstly, mRNA expression level of AURKB in LUAD was systematically analyzed using the ONCOMINE and the cancer genome atlas databases. Then, the association between AURKB expression and clinical parameters was investigated by UALCAN. ⋯ In addition, immunohistochemistry showed that AURKB was highly expressed in lung adenocarcinoma tissues, while it was weakly expressed in normal tissues. Subsequently, AURKB expression was identified to be negatively associated with Overall survival (P < 1e-16), post-progression survival (P = .017), first progression (P = 9.8e-09). This study confirms that increased expression of AURKB in LUAD is associated with poor prognosis, suggesting that AURKB might be used as a promising prognostic biomarker and novel therapeutic target for LUAD.
