Simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty (SBTHA) is an effective procedure for patients with disease bilaterally. But there is concern about increased blood loss and complications of SBTHA than staged total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aimed to evaluate the differences in the clinical outcomes and complication rate of SBTHA with drainage and without drainage for reducing the concerns. ⋯ But SBTHA without drainage is more painful method than SBTHA with drainage. Therefore, SBTHA without drainage will be a good option to reduce the burden on the patient by reducing postoperative bleeding if it can control pain well after surgery. III, Retrospective case-control study.

Absent contractility is a rare esophageal motility disorder defined by high-resolution manometry which remains poorly understood in pathogenesis and management. We investigated the clinical symptoms, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy findings, and lower esophageal sphincter (LES) characteristics in adult patients diagnosed with absent contractility on high resolution manometry and factors associated with erosive esophagitis that were found on endoscopy in these patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with absent contractility who were examined at the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Vietnam between March 2018 and December 2020. ⋯ Male sex (adjusted odds ratio = 2.01, 95% confidence interval: 1.04-3.89) and an IRP4s < 5 mm Hg (adjusted odds ratio = 2.21, 95% confidence interval: 1.12-4.37) were significantly associated with erosive esophagitis. Absent contractility was present in many patients without known systemic diseases. Erosive esophagitis was common and associated with male sex and low IRP4s.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been extensively used in the management of patients with a herniated lumbar disc. Nevertheless, immediate postoperative MRI has not become a standard procedure, with limited research suggesting that the findings are often similar to preoperative MRI in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. This study aimed to determine the benefits of immediate postoperative MRI in patients with or without postoperative symptoms and its correlation with these symptoms. ⋯ Intraoperative bleeding and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) showed significant correlations with postoperative pain (P = .018 and .002, respectively). In a multivariate analysis, intraoperative blood loss and CCI independently correlated with postoperative pain (P = .001 and .001, respectively). Based on our findings, intraoperative blood loss and CCI appear to be the factors that may predict the persistence of postoperative pain, despite normal findings on MRI.

Since tobacco contains numerous harmful substances, besides nicotine, which is addictive, smoking cessation products and tobacco alternatives, such as electronic (e-) cigarettes, nicotine chewing gums, and patches, are being widely used. Nicotine gums are consumed orally. The nicotine from the gum is absorbed at a slower rate than that from e-cigarettes, and the former remains in the bloodstream for a longer period. In addition, the maximum number of daily doses is high, and it can be purchased without a doctor's prescription in many countries. ⋯ Acute respiratory exacerbation due to nicotine poisoning (from levels exceeding the lethal dose of 30-60 mg) was observed, although the gums were consumed over several days. Patients with nicotine poisoning may show acute respiratory failure and should be monitored carefully. Further studies are required to determine the toxic effects of nicotine replacement therapies.

The prognosis of synchronous multiple lung adenocarcinoma (SMLA) dramatically differs due to its nature of multiple primaries or intrapulmonary metastases. This study aimed to assess computed tomography (CT)-reflected SMLA features regarding ground-glass nodules (GGNs) and solid lesions and their correlation with prognostication. One seventy eight SMLA patients who underwent surgical resection were reviewed. ⋯ Meanwhile, OS exhibited similar treads among the three groups. Besides, after multivariate Cox analyses adjustment, MS versus MG independently correlated with DFS (P = .030) and OS (P = .027), but SPG versus MG did not. In conclusion, preoperative CT-imaging MS lesions reflect advanced disease features and poor prognosis compared to MG and solid lesion plus GGN in SMLA patients who underwent surgical resection.
