The pathogenesis of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke like episodes (MELAS) syndrome has not been fully elucidated. The m.3243A > G mutation which is responsible for 80% MELAS patients affects proteins with undetermined functions. Therefore, we performed quantitative proteomic analysis on skeletal muscle specimens from MELAS patients. ⋯ Gene ontology and kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway analysis showed significant enrichment in phagosome, ribosome and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) signaling pathway. The imbalance between oxidative stress and antioxidant defense, the activation of autophagosomes, and the abnormal metabolism of mitochondrial ribosome proteins (MRPs) might play an important role in m.3243A > G MELAS. The combination of proteomic and bioinformatics analysis could contribute potential molecular networks to the pathogenesis of MELAS in a comprehensive manner.

We conducted an anonymous survey in 9 of our university affiliated outpatient dialysis units to address the concern that many in-center hemodialysis patients may not feel comfortable sharing their experiences. Major goals of this study: Investigating level of patient satisfaction with their care; Evaluating the subjective perception of the level of understanding of patients regarding pertinent issues of their disease and its management; Identifying potential avenues for care improvement. Survey was conducted in English, paper-based, with answer choices to individual questions for patient satisfaction and education graded using a 5-point Likert scale. ⋯ About 62% of overall study participants identified at least one area where they felt additional information would result in improvement of care. Our results indicate that patients undergoing outpatient hemodialysis were overall satisfied and had a good perceptive understanding about their health. Based on the patients' input, strategies focused on addressing pain and discomfort, privacy, providing information about palliative care/hospice, mental health resources, and the process of kidney transplantation may promote improvement in overall quality of care.

Lobaplatin is a new platinum-based cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agent. Endostar is an endogenous angiogenic inhibitor with implicated anti-tumor activity. This study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of thoracic perfusion of lobaplatin combined with endostar in the treatment of malignant pleural effusions (MPE). ⋯ The efficacy of lobaplatin combined with endostar was superior to lobaplatin alone. The safety was higher than cisplatin combined with endostar through thoracic perfusion in treating MPE, which indicated that lobaplatin combined with endostar could be the effective agent for controlling MPE.

The expression of sex-determining region Y (SRY)-like high-mobility group (HMG) box 2 (SOX2) in gastric cancer and the prognosis of patients are controversial. This study analyzed the relationship between SOX2 expression and baseline data, clinicopathological parameters, prognosis, and Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with gastric cancer, and provided new supplements for the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer. ⋯ Although downregulation expression of SOX2 are related to clinicopathological parameters in gastric cancer, which is not correlated with prognosis. This controversy over the expression of SOX2 will provide a new idea for the study of gastric cancer.

Control effect of virtual reality technology on procedural pain in children's wound: A meta-analysis.
Children who undergo wound manipulation usually experience pain. Virtual reality technology is a novel and effective non pharmaceutical therapy for reducing pain in children scheduled to undergo wound manipulation. However, the effectiveness of Virtual reality technology in controlling procedural pain in children's wounds has not been evaluated in a systematic review. ⋯ As a distraction method of non drug assisted analgesia intervention, virtual reality technology can reduce children's procedural pain and discomfort symptoms.
