Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a rapidly spreading deadly respiratory disease that emerged in the city of Wuhan in December 2019. As a result of its rapid and widespread transmission, the WHO declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020 and studies evaluating mortality and prognosis in COVID-19 gained importance. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the survival of COVID-19 patients followed up in a tertiary intensive care unit (ICU) and undergoing chest computed tomography (CT) scoring. ⋯ Chest CT score was not significantly associated with mortality in COVID-19 patients. Our idea that COVID-19 will cause greater mortality in patients with severe chest CT findings has changed. More studies on COVID-19 are needed to reveal the markers that affect prognosis and mortality in this period when new variants are affecting the world.

To explore the clinical efficacy of quadruple surgery (anterior segment pars plana vitrectomy + phacoemulsification + posterior capsulorhexis + intraocular lens (IOL) implantation + trabeculectomy) and dual surgery (phacoemulsification + IOL implantation + trabeculectomy) to treat medically uncontrolled acute primary angle-closure glaucoma (APACG). The clinical data of 44 patients (45 eyes) with APACG treated in the Department of Ophthalmology of Taihe Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into 2 groups based on quadruple surgery and dual surgery. ⋯ During treatment, the incidence of complications in group B was significantly higher than that in group A (P < .01). The clinical efficacy of anterior segment pars plana vitrectomy combined with posterior capsulorhexis, phacoemulsification, and trabeculectomy elicits clinical safety in treating medically uncontrolled APACG. It has remarkable effects and leads to a significant decrease in the occurrence of complications.

The value of NSE to predict ICU mortality in patients with septic shock: A prospective observational study.
To investigate the predictive value of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) on intensive care unit (ICU) mortality in patients with septic shock. Seventy-five patients with septic shock hospitalized in the emergency intensive care unit (EICU) of Hebei General Hospital from March 2020 to September 2021 were included, and the patients' baseline characteristics and laboratory findings were collected. NSE levels on the first and fourth days after admission were retrieved. ⋯ NSE(day4) displayed good sensitivity and specificity (Sn = 61.11%, Sp = 91.23%) for predicting ICU mortality with a cutoff value of 25.94 ug/L. High-level NSE (day4) is an independent predictor of ICU mortality in sepsis shock patients, which may become a good alternate option for evaluating sepsis severity. More extensive studies are needed in the future to demonstrate the prognosis value of NSE.

Eosinophilic infiltration is sometimes observed histologically in ulcerative colitis (UC), but the effect of the degree of infiltration on the treatment course for UC is not completely understood. We investigated whether short-term steroid administration in UC patients refractory to maintenance therapy, with high eosinophilic infiltration in the colonic mucosa, contributed to the clinical and endoscopic improvement. Ten patients with endoscopically active and pathologically high eosinophilic infiltration, based on pathological examination using endoscopic biopsy, were examined for the clinical background when starting steroid treatment. ⋯ All scores improved significantly after steroid use (P = .042, P = .002, P = .002, respectively). Steroids were discontinued in all patients; no patients required steroid re-administration. There may be cases of UC with eosinophilic infiltration into the colonic mucosa and resistance to maintenance treatment, suggesting that short-term steroid administration may contribute to clinical and endoscopic improvements.

Higher cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection incidence has been observed with cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker/defibrillator (CRT-P/D) and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices compared to traditional pacemakers with a 1.2% rate reported at 1 year. CIED infection management has high morbidity/mortality. A previous study from this institution demonstrated significantly reduced CIED infection rate when peri/post-operative antibiotics were given for traditional pacemaker procedures. ⋯ This rate of 4.96 infections per 1000 device-years compares favorably to contemporary rates of 8.9 infections per 1000 device-years. Most CIED infections occur late and well-beyond the 1-year follow-up of the Prevention of Arrhythmia Device Infection Trial, the largest trial on this question. This approach should be considered pending a definitive trial.
