Asymptomatic gastric tuberculosis in the gastric body mimicking an isolated microscopic erosion: A rare case report.
Gastric tuberculosis is rarely seen in clinical practice, which occurs mostly secondary to lung tuberculosis, intestinal tuberculosis, and other common tuberculosis. Gastric tuberculosis rarely presents as a single microscopic superficial erosion. We recently diagnosed such a case, hence reporting it herein. ⋯ Gastroscopy should be performed to look for gastric tuberculosis if the patient presents primary tuberculosis in other organs/tissues such as cervical lymph nodes. If any small erosion is found, a biopsy is justified for checking the possibility of gastric tuberculosis.

The sensitivity and specificity of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for esophageal cancer are variable. The aim of the present study was to determine the accuracy of EUS for the T staging of esophageal cancer and to explore the factors that affect the accuracy. This was a retrospective study of patients with esophageal cancer who underwent EUS between January 2018 and September 2019 at the author's hospital. ⋯ The multivariable analysis revealed that highly differentiated tumors (odds ratio = 9.167, P = .041) and pT stage ≥T2 (odds ratio = 2.932, P = .004) were independent factors of accurate uT stage. The staging of esophageal cancer using EUS has low sensitivity but high specificity. Highly differentiated tumors and pT stage ≥2 tumors were associated with the accuracy of uT staging.

Laryngeal cancer (LC) as one of common malignant tumors in the head and neck region accounted for 1% to 5% of new cancer cases and was ranked as the third otolaryngology cancer. However, some patients with LC were diagnosed at the advanced stage, which can cause delayed diagnosis and treatment. It is an urgent task to seek effective biomarkers for the early diagnosis of LC aimed at alleviating suffering. ⋯ Furthermore, leave-one-out cross-validation method was used to evaluate diagnostic performance of selected metabolite biomarkers. A biomarker panel consisting of arginine, proline, hexacosanoic carnitine, ornithine /citrulline, and 3-hydroxy-octadecenoylcarnitine exhibited potential to distinguish patients with LC from healthy individuals, with a sensitivity of 0.8974 and a specificity of 0.8302 in leave-one-out cross-validation model. The metabolomic analysis of LC patients is beneficial to screen disease-associated biomarkers and develop new diagnostic approaches.

Hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) is a rare illness that results in bone marrow failure following hepatitis development. The etiological agent remains unknown in most HAAA cases. However, clinical features of the disease and immunotherapy response indicate that immune-mediated factors play a central role in the pathogenesis of HAAA. Activation of cytotoxic T cells and increase in CD8 cells could exert cytotoxic effects on the myelopoietic cells in the bone marrow. ⋯ This case demonstrates that HAAA induced by cytomegalovirus infection features decreasing CD4+ and increasing CD8+ PBLs as the bone marrow hypoplasia progresses. The PBLs return to their normal levels with the recovery from the disease. Our case findings thus support the involvement of immunological abnormality in HAAA.

This study analyzed the changes in the number of outpatients and disease presentation during the entirety of 2020, the period of COVID-19 pandemic. The average annual number of outpatient visits between 2017 and 2019 (before COVID-19) and the total number of outpatient visits in 2020 (COVID-19 period) were compared. Diagnostic codes were identified during 2 periods to analyze changes in the number of outpatient visits according to disease and month. ⋯ In addition, the number of outpatient visits due to viral diseases continued to decline, while the incidence of bacterial diseases increased rapidly in the second half of the year. This study confirmed that the number of outpatient visits due to bacterial or viral infections decreased throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Therefore, expanding public health and telemedicine services is necessary to prevent secondary health problems caused by essential medical use restrictions.
