Excessive assistance may decrease stroke patients' physical activity and make them more dependent on assistance. We have structured a system that provides an ADL (activities of daily living) educational program that focuses on stroke patients' toileting in our daily clinical practice. Here, we investigated the effect of a functional independence measure (FIM) scale on the recovery of patients with acute stroke. ⋯ The recoveries of the total, motor, and cognitive FIM scores recovery at discharge were significantly greater in the FIM group compared with the control group (68.0 vs 45.0, P = .004; 41.0 vs 24.0, P = .005; and 24.0 vs 20.0, P = .007, respectively). The use of the FIM scale contributes to the patients' recovery of physical function and cognitive function. The FIM scale can contribute to stroke patients' recovery of activities of daily living.

Relationship between nutritional biomarkers and occlusal status in gastric cancer patients using the Eichner index: Observational study.
Systemic inflammatory responses and nutritional status are useful prognostic factors in gastric cancer patients. Since oral hypofunction causes undernutrition, we cross-sectionally investigated whether nutritional biomarkers were affected by the occlusal supporting zone status. In 114 gastric cancer patients, the gastric cancer stage, body mass index, albumin levels, total lymphocyte counts, cholesterol levels, C-reactive protein levels, and 4 nutritional biomarkers - the Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, prognostic nutrition index (PNI), and controlling nutritional status (CONUT) - were evaluated. ⋯ PNI values were lower in group C with poor occlusal support zones than in group A with stable occlusal support zones. Occlusal supporting zone reductions were undernutrition associated. Eichner Class C patients with few occlusal supporting zones had poor GPS, PNI, and CONUT values and were undernourished.

Although research in general medicine is diverse, it has not been compared with research in a different medical specialty. The study aim was to understand the characteristics of research produced at Japanese university departments of general medicine and published in English-language journals, via comparison with another academic specialty, cardiology. In this cross-sectional study, a nationwide survey of the official websites of 82 university-affiliated medical schools in Japan was conducted in April 2020 to identify the heads of general medicine departments. ⋯ This is the first study to describe the research characteristics of general medicine university departments in Japan through comparison with research in a different academic specialty. General medicine researchers in Japan comprise a heterogeneous group that mainly publishes research on general and internal medicine. Some general medicine researchers take a multidisciplinary approach to research and publishing.

This study aimed to explore candidate genes and their potential interaction mechanism critical to the pathophysiology of Turner syndrome by using the Gene Expression Omnibus database. ⋯ In this study, 733 DEGs and 10 hub genes were identified. They would be new candidate targets in Turner syndrome.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) comprises about 50% of the cases of heart failure (HF), but so far there is no effective treatment strategy. This study used bibliometric methods to analyze the scientific literature on HFpEF in 2009 to 2020, and evaluate the global scientific output of HFpEF research, in order to explore the research status and trends in this field. ⋯ Due to the multi-dimensional bibliometric analysis, this study shows a wide view of scientific productivity related to HFpEF, and provides valuable guidance for researchers interested in HFpEF, assisting them in understanding the research status, identifying potential collaborators, discovering research hotspots and frontiers, and conducting more in-depth research.
