Coronary artery calcification, an established marker of atherosclerotic plaque burden associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease, is routinely evaluated using electron beam computerized tomography or multidetector computed tomography (CT). However, aortic calcification, which is also a risk factor for adverse cardiac events, is not frequently assessed, despite being easily detected via standard chest radiography. We therefore sought to clarify the association between aortic calcification and significant coronary artery calcification to determine the feasibility of performing chest radiography to evaluate the risk of future cardiovascular events. ⋯ Aortic calcification was associated with coronary artery calcification. Calcification of the aortic arch, which can be readily detected by routine chest radiography, may be associated with coronary artery calcification and its assessment should therefore be considered to identify patients at increased risk of cardiovascular events. Further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of transcanal endoscopic treatment for congenital middle ear cholesteatoma in children. Eleven children diagnosed with congenital middle ear cholesteatoma, who underwent total ear endoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, were included from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital between January 2016 and December 2020. We retrospectively analyzed their operation process and surgical complications through the surgical video; moreover, we compared the pre- and postoperative hearing outcomes. ⋯ Further, the air-bone conduction difference was reduced to >20 dB and >10 dB in 11 and 7 children, respectively. Follow-up of the children did not reveal sensorineural deafness, facial paralysis, and other serious complications; further, there were no cases of recurrence. Transcanal endoscopic treatment for congenital middle ear cholesteatoma in children is feasible, minimally invasive, and functional.

The quality of an oocyte is influenced by its microenvironment, which includes cumulus cells and follicular fluid, as well as cells of the immune system and their products. The ovarian interleukins, which are secreted by the granulosa cells and other immune cells within the ovaries and follicles, regulate various functions between the cells. IL-6 is a cytokine that is present in the follicular fluid and may affect the quality of oocytes. ⋯ The concentration of IL-6 in the follicular fluid was higher in patients with confirmed pregnancy (9.55 ± 7.47 ng/ml). Based on our results, we conclude that the concentration of IL-6 affects the outcome of IVF. If the range of IL-6 concentration is between 3,67 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml, we can expect good IVF outcome with vital pregnancy.

Stress granules (SGs) are the dense granules formed in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells in response to stress stimuli, such as endoplasmic reticulum stress, heat shock, hypoxia, and arsenate exposure. Although SGs have been attracting a lot of research attention, there is still a lack of systematic analysis of SGs in the literature. ⋯ This article presents essential insights on the characteristics and influence of SGs, demonstrating their indispensable role in immune regulation and other fields.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy for giant intralobar pulmonary sequestration: A case report.
Pulmonary sequestration, which can be divided into 2 main types: intralobar pulmonary sequestration (IPS) and extralobar pulmonary sequestration, is an uncommon congenital condition for which surgical resection is usually indicated. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, as compared with open thoracotomy, has increasingly become the preferred operative procedure in the treatment of PS, owing to less postoperative pain and faster recovery. This report describes a rare and challenging case with a giant IPS undergoing video-assisted thoracic lobectomy. ⋯ Although full of challenges, thoracoscopic lobectomy for giant IPS is a safe and feasible surgical procedure associated with reduced surgical trauma and postoperative pain as well as improved cosmetic results compared with traditional thoracotomy.
