This study purposed to investigate differences in the thalamocortical tract of the ascending reticular activating system between vegetative state (VS) and minimally conscious state (MCS) patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI-BI). Fourteen patients with disorders of consciousness following HI-BI (VS group: 7 patients, MCS group: 7 patients) and 12 normal subjects were recruited. The 5 parts of reconstructed thalamocortical tract were prefrontal cortex (PFC), premotor cortex, primary motor cortex (M1), primary somatosensory cortex (S1), and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). ⋯ The FA values and TV of all parts of the thalamocortical tract in the VS group and the FA values of all parts and TV of PFC, premotor cortex, and PPC parts in the MCS group were lower than the control group (P < .05). In addition, the FA values of PFC and PPC parts were significantly lower in the VS group than the MCS group (P < .05). The results of our pilot study indicate that PFC and PPC parts of the thalamocortical tract are important areas to assess for differentiation of VS and MCS after HI-BI.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection presenting with shock and intermittent eosinophilia: A case report.
Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. The clinical presentation varies according to the stage of infection. Diagnosing strongyloidiasis is a challenge in clinical practice due to the inconsistency of eosinophilia and the low sensitivity of standard microscopic stool examination. Strongyloides infection presenting with shock is rare. ⋯ This report provides a brief review of the current modalities used for diagnosing strongyloidiasis. It emphasizes the low sensitivity of microscopic examination, and highlights the role of gastroduodenoscopy in the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis. This report also assures that patients with strongyloidiasis have a good prognosis when they are treated timely and appropriately.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis after coronavirus disease 2019: A case report and literature review.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic and COVID-19-associated anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis may occur through an immune-mediated pathomechanism. ⋯ Cases of previously reported anti-NMDAR encephalitis with COVID-19 were reviewed and compared with the present case. Clinicians should be aware of the occurrence of anti-NMDAR encephalitis in patients who present with neuropsychiatric complaints during or after exposure to COVID-19. Further studies are required to determine the causal relationship between the 2 diseases and predict the prognosis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis after COVID-19 exposure.
