Genetic factors play a role in individual differences in pain experience. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify novel loci regulating pain processing. We conducted a 2-stage GWAS and the candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) association study on pain experience using an exploratory cohort of patients with cancer pain. ⋯ We confirmed its significant association with daily analgesic usage in the confirmatory cohort (P = .028), although the minor allele affected pain experience in an opposite manner. We identified a novel genetic variant associated with pain experience. Further studies are required to validate the role of pleiotrophin in pain processing.

This study retrospectively explored the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) combined with Qianzhengsan decoction (QZSD) for the treatment of peripheral facial paralysis (PFP). This retrospective study included patients with PFP admitted to a single hospital between July 2018 and June 2020. Ninety patients were included and divided into treatment (n = 45) and control (n = 45) groups. ⋯ Patients in both groups reported adverse events. The results of this study showed that patients with PFP and QZSD received better outcomes than those who did not. Further studies are required to confirm these results.

Studies have shown aspirin decreases the risk of some cancers. However, the evidence reported the association between aspirin and cancer risk in the diabetic population. In this study, we investigate whether aspirin and dipyridamole decrease the risk of cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes. ⋯ After adjustment with multiple covariates, both low and high doses of aspirin and dipyridamole decrease liver cancer with risk ratios of 0.56 (95% CI, 0.37-0.83), 0.14 (95% CI, 0.05-0.39), 0.61 (95% CI, 0.38-0.99), and 0.28 (95% CI, 0.12-0.66), respectively. Both low and high doses of aspirin decrease any types of cancer with risk ratios of 0.79 (95% CI, 0.64-0.98) and 0.49 (95% CI, 0.34-0.70), respectively. Therefore, we conclude aspirin may decrease any types of cancer and liver cancer, and dipyridamole may decrease the risk of liver cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Kimura disease (KD) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disease characterized by painless subcutaneous nodules predominantly located in the head and neck regions. Orbital KD, which intrudes into the intraconal space and results in compressive optic neuropathy, is rare and has not been previously reported. ⋯ We present a rare case of orbital KD-associated optic neuropathy, wherein early diagnosis and treatment preserved the patient's vision. This complication should be considered in patients with a history of compressive optic neuropathy during the differential diagnosis.

Metabolism of barium in the human body after suicidal ingestion: A CARE-compliant case report.
Thus far, barium poisoning has been seldom reported and the metabolism of barium in human body has not been explored. ⋯ The serum concentration of barium decreased rapidly in the first 24 hours. In this period, prompt and massive potassium supplementation and other symptomatic treatments are effective and recommended.
