Total pancreatectomy (TP) is performed for diseases of the entire pancreas. However, reluctance remains regarding TP because of the fear of high morbidity and mortality. Our retrospective study aimed to evaluate the postoperative outcomes of TP performed at a high-volume single center and to identify the risk factors associated with major morbidities and mortality after TP. ⋯ The independent risk factors for poor overall survival were R1 resection, adenocarcinoma, and high estimated blood loss (EBL). TP is a safe and feasible procedure with satisfactory postoperative outcomes when performed at a high-volume center. More research and efforts are needed to significantly improve overall survival rate in the future.

To assess the early predictive value of maternal parameters for early-onset sepsis (EOS) in preterm infants, especially including the maternal neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV). The retrospective cohort study examined a total of 231 preterm infants (69 with EOS) from May 2017 to October 2021 of the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University, randomly divided (7:3) into the training set group (n = 162) and validation set group (n = 69). Thirteen clinical variables (including MPV, NLR, and PLR) were included as the research objects. ⋯ The C-index for the training set and validation set groups were 0.872 and 0.889, respectively. The maternal NLR, PLR, and MPV levels had good predictive value for EOS in premature infants. The nomogram in our study could help clinicians predict the occurrence of EOS.

Intentional or unintentional exposure to asphyxiating gases is a significant public health concern worldwide. Argon poisoning is fatal, and its onset is primarily due to neurological damage. ⋯ This case describes the pathogenesis, neurological damage, and rescue process of argon gas poisoning. Argon poisoning was found to damage bilateral cerebellar hemispheres and bilateral hippocampal regions, affecting the patient's consciousness and memory, and was found to cause abnormal liver function and heart rate disorders.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by bone fragility. Although the disease severity is known to influence the ability to walk, little is known about how children with severe OI can achieve practical ambulation (PA). This study aimed to determine the early predictors of future mobility in children with OI. ⋯ The age at initial corrective osteotomy of the lower extremities in the PA group was significantly lower than that in the NA group, although there was no significant difference in the disease severity in infancy between the groups. Height during infancy, age at initial fracture, and neonatal respiratory status could be prognostic factors for mobility in OI. Surgical interventions at an early age may influence walking ability in children with moderate OI.

We evaluated the diagnostic performance of both gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for focal liver lesions, especially for the detection of small (<2 cm) intrahepatic lesions. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI and CEUS before liver resection and compared Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI and CEUS in the detection of focal liver lesions. A total of 216 patients were included, and 309 lesions were found. ⋯ Among 27 patients, 50 more lesions were detected by MRI than CEUS, 56% (28/50) of which were malignant. For the large lesion, the diagnostic performance is similar between Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI and CEUS, and the sensitivity and coincidence rates of both methods are high. Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI is likely to detect small (<2 cm) focal intrahepatic lesions.
