This is the first review about obstetric involvement in mitochondrial disorders (MIDs). The purpose of the review was to discuss recent advances and knowledge about the type and frequency of obstetric complications in MIDs. A narrative review for preferred reporting items was performed in MEDLINE, Current Contents, EMBASE, Web of Science, Web of Knowledge, LILACS, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. ⋯ MIDs can be associated with various obstetric complications. Some of these complications are more common in pregnant females with MID compared with healthy pregnant females. Obstetricians should be aware of MIDs and should know that pregnant females with a MID have an increased risk of developing complications during pregnancy or delivery.

Threatened abortions are a serious health risk for women. Deferiprone tablets are commonly used in the treatment of clinical delivery. Traditional Chinese medicine, a characteristic medical system inherited for thousands of years, often applies Shoutai pills in the treatment of Threatened abortion and has achieved good results. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Shoutai pills combined with dedrogesterone tablets for the treatment of early preterm abortion. ⋯ This study provides high-quality evidence on the efficacy and safety of Shoutai pills in combination with dedrogesterone tablets for the treatment of preterm abortion.

Emergency cesarean delivery in patients with heart failure increases maternal and fetal mortality. The present study aimed to identify the relationship between the use of anesthesia for delivery and progressive cardiac deterioration in women with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and to examine its implications on maternal and fetal outcomes. Twenty-nine pregnancies in 25 women with DCM from the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center Hospital (Suita, Japan) were included in this retrospective longitudinal study. ⋯ The rate of general anesthesia was 25% in patients who experienced heart failure and 4% in others. There was no incidence of maternal or fetal death. A preterm anesthetic evaluation may be warranted to optimize anesthetic management when the ejection fraction decreases to ≤ 35% before 34 weeks gestation in patients with DCM.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a common cause of death following acute myocardial infarction (MI). This study aimed to evaluate the adjusted mortality of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) with intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP) for patients with MI-CS. We included 300 MI patients selected from a multinational registry and categorized into VA-ECMO + IABP (N = 39) and no VA-ECMO (medical management ± IABP) (N = 261) groups. ⋯ However, better survival benefit 30 days post-ECMO could be supposed (31.6% vs 83.4%; P = .022). Therefore, patients with MI-CS treated with IABP with additional VA-ECMO and those not supported with ECMO have comparable overall 30-day and 1-year mortality risks. However, VA-ECMO-supported survivors might have better long-term clinical outcomes.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) can induce wound healing by increasing tissue microcirculation. However, studies on the effect of ESWT on enhancing tissue microcirculation in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), particularly on when the microcirculation increases after ESWT application, are still lacking. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effectiveness of ESWT in promoting microcirculation in DFU patients in a time-dependent manner. ⋯ These findings imply that the ESWT may improve microcirculation in patients with Wagner grades I to II DFU. However, this impact requires at least 2 weeks or more than 6 sessions. For better comparison, further studies with larger clinical groups and extended period are needed.
