Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition leading to intermittent airway narrowing and obstruction. Although millions suffer from asthma globally, there is limited data from African countries, particularly Sudan. This study addresses the gap in research on asthma knowledge, attitudes, and practices among the adults in Shendi locality, Northern Sudan. ⋯ No significant differences were observed in co-patient practice scores between groups. The study highlights a generally good level of asthma knowledge and positive attitudes among participants, with some variability in practices based on socio-demographic factors. These findings emphasize the need for targeted education and intervention programs to improve asthma management in rural Sudan.

Previous studies have demonstrated that thyroid hormone plays an important role in normal bone development, bone metabolism, and establishment of peak bone mass. However, the correlation of thyroid status with bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) is rarely discussed. The current study probes into the potential association between thyroid status and spinal BMC, BMD, and OVF from a novel perspective of thyroid function (TF) and sensitivity to thyroid hormone based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. ⋯ In addition, the results of the restricted cubic spline model were consistent with the weighted multivariate regression analysis after adjustment. The results of this cross-sectional study showed that higher FT3/FT4 and TPOAb were associated with decreased spinal BMC and the increased risk of OVF, indicating a complex link between thyroid status and bone health. Therefore, patients with hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroid disease, or abnormal peripheral thyroid sensitivity, especially who with elevated TPOAb or FT3/FT4, should focus on the prevention of vertebral osteopenia, osteoporosis, and OVF.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant global public health concern. Several observational studies have examined the association between inflammatory cytokines and the risk of colorectal cancer, but the findings have been inconsistent. In this study, we employed a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, primarily using the inverse variance weighted approach, to investigate the causal relationship between inflammatory cytokines and CRC. ⋯ Additionally, colon cancer is associated with elevated levels of FGF-Basic (OR: 1.10, P = .028). Consistent results were also found in MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode analysis. Our study presents novel evidence supporting the causal relationship between inflammatory cytokines and CRC.

Poor prognosis in patients with distant metastasis of gastric signet ring cell carcinoma (GSRC), and there are few studies on the development and validation of the diagnosis and prognosis of distant metastasis of GSRC. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was used to identify patients with GSRC from 2004 to 2019. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify independent risk factors for distant metastasis of GSRC, while univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis were used to determine independent prognostic factors for patients with distant metastasis of GSRC. ⋯ The receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, decision curve analysis curve, and Kaplan-Meier survival curve of the training set and validation set confirmed that the 2 nomograms could accurately predict the occurrence and prognosis of distant metastasis in GSRC. Two nomograms can serve as effective prediction tools for predicting distant metastasis in GSRC patients and the prognosis of patients with distant metastasis. They have a certain clinical reference value.

Diet and lifestyle modifications remain the foundation of obesity treatment, but they have historically proven insufficient for significant, long-term weight loss. As a result, there is a high demand for new pharmacologic treatments to promote weight loss and prevent life-threatening diseases associated with obesity. ⋯ Semaglutide and liraglutide, which were initially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, have since been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as weight loss medications due to their effectiveness in promoting significant and sustained weight loss. In this narrative review, we will explore the mechanism of GLP-1 RAs, their effects on weight loss, cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes, common adverse effects, and strategies for managing these effects.
