Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by the development of nonmalignant tissue growths (hamartomas) in various organ systems, often located in the brain, skin, heart, lung and kidneys. The delayed diagnosis could be attributed to low expectation or exposure of physicians to this rare disease. High index of clinical suspicion is required for early diagnosis of rare diseases to prevent adverse outcomes. ⋯ The patients described had TSC using "clinical diagnostic criteria." Under the clinical diagnostic criteria of TSC, 4 of 11 major criteria and 3 of 7 minor criteria are skin features. Hence, awareness on skin features as clinical markers to suspect TSC should be emphasized in resource-limited countries.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common hip disorder in infants. Ultrasonographic screening is considered the most reliable method for early detection of DDH in newborn infants. This study aimed to determine the incidence of DDH at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. ⋯ Ultrasonography (US) should be used as a complementary imaging modality for clinical examination of DDH. Infants with breech presentation, clicky hip, and skeletal deformity should be scanned by US. Further prospective studies are recommended.

This study was to investigate the improvement value of Niaoduqing particles in the outcome of non-diabetic patients with stage IV chronic kidney disease (CKD). The non-diabetic patients with stage IV CKD who were to receive Niaoduqing particles were set as the study group (252 cases), and the patients with the same disease who only received Western medicine in the public database were set as the control group (220 cases). The follow-up visits were 3 months/time for 1 year. ⋯ The clinical indexes of the 2 groups were observed and compared. The results showed that the rate of compound outcome was significantly lower in the study group (28.17%) than in the control group (36.82%), the glomerular filtration rate was significantly higher than that in the control group, and the levels of uric acid and urea were significantly lower than that in the control group (P < .05). Niaoduqing particles can reduce creatinine and urea nitrogen, stabilize renal function, delay dialysis time, and improve the incidence of compound outcome in patients with non-diabetic stage IV CKD, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

It has been reported that diabetes and hypertension increase the adverse outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Aside from the inherent factors of diabetes and hypertension, it remains unclear whether antidiabetic or antihypertensive medications contribute to the increased adverse outcomes of COVID-19. The effect of commonly used antidiabetic and antihypertensive medications on COVID-19 outcomes has been inconsistently concluded in existing observational studies. Conducting a systematic study on the causal relationship between these medications and COVID-19 would be beneficial in guiding their use during the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ The findings from this comprehensive Mendelian randomization analysis suggest that there may be no causal relationship between the 5 commonly used antidiabetic medications (SGLT-2 inhibitors, Sulfonylureas, Insulin analogues, Thiazolidinediones, GLP-1 analogues) and the 3 commonly used antihypertensive medications (CCBs, ACE inhibitors, BBs) with COVID-19 susceptibility, hospitalization, and severity.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the altered vaginal microecological environment of patients. Initially, HPV genotyping and microecological detection were performed in 1281 subjects in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of The First Hospital of Qinhuangdao (Qinhuangdao, China). The relationship between the enzymes of vaginal microecology, that is, proline aminopeptidase and acetylglucosaminidase, and vaginal inflammatory diseases, as well as the prognosis of HPV infection, was analyzed. ⋯ Furthermore, the observations indicated that positive prolyl aminopeptidase and acetylglucosaminidase could increase the risk of various subtypes of HPV infection in patients. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis presented that the expression of prolyl aminopeptidase and acetylglucosaminidase could offer exceptional diagnostic efficacy, indicating their association with persistent HPV infection. In summary, our results highlighted that the expression of positive prolyl aminopeptidase and acetylglucosaminidase in the vaginal microecology could be substantially correlated to the occurrence and the development of vaginal inflammatory diseases, as well as the outcome and the risk of persistent HPV infection.
