Case Reports
Subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord with cerebellar lesions: A case report.
Subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord is a degenerative disease of the central and peripheral nervous systems caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, mainly involving the spinal cord posterior, lateral, and peripheral nerves, but rarely involving the cerebellum. ⋯ The symptomatic people should seek medical treatment in time to avoid further deterioration of the disease. When esophagogastroduodenoscopy is performed as part of routine physical examination in asymptomatic people, it should be checked for the presence of autoimmune gastritis. Early diagnosis can prevent irreversible neuropathy.

Comparative Study Observational Study
Comparative analysis of the quantitative point-of-care CareSTART™ total bilirubin with central laboratory total bilirubin assays in neonatal blood samples.
This study aimed to assess and compare the accuracy of point-of-care CareSTART™ S1 Total Bilirubin test with a central laboratory total bilirubin assay using neonatal samples. This study was conducted using 152 paired measurements obtained from 122 neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels assayed with the central laboratory assay, laboratory bilirubinomter, trancutaneous bliribubin (TcB) instrument and CareSTART were compared using Bland-Altman analysis. ⋯ CareSTART tended to underestimate total bilirubin concentrations compared with TcB, however, the LoA was narrower due to the smaller SD of mean difference for CareSTART. The CareSTART Total Bilirubin test provides an accurate alternative to TcB for total serum bilirubin measurement. Given its low-cost, ease-of-use, and portability, the use of CareSTART is expected to provide point-of-care measurements, especially in low-resource settings.

The incidence and prevalence of prediabetes has become a global concern. The risk factors of prediabetes, such as insulin resistance, adiposity, lipotoxicity and obesity, in conjunction with the alteration of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), have been positively correlated with the high morbidity and mortality rate. Thus, this systematic review seeks to establish the relationship between the risk factors of prediabetes, namely insulin resistance adiposity, lipotoxicity, obesity and the RAAS. Therefore, a synthesis of these risk factors, their clinical indicators and the RAAS components will be compiled in order to establish the association between the RAAS alteration and obesity in prediabetic patients. ⋯ This protocol for a systematic review was developed in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) standards. This will be accomplished by searching clinical Medical Subject Headings categories in MEDLINE with full texts, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Academic Search Complete, ICTRP and ClinicalTrial.gov. Reviewers will examine all of the findings and select the studies that meet the qualifying criteria. To check for bias, the Downs and Black Checklist will be used, followed by a Review Manager v5. A Forrest plot will be used for the meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, the strength of the evidence will be assessed utilizing the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation procedure (GRADE). The protocol has been registered with PROSPERO CRD42022320252. This systematic review and meta-analysis will include published randomized clinical trials, observational studies and case-control studies from the years 2000 to 2022.

Given the scarce reports on the interplay between Fu's subcutaneous needling (FSN), tightened muscle, and therapeutic effects, we developed a clinical research protocol to synchronously collect data on clinical efficacy and muscle characteristics in patients with knee osteoarthritis, exploring the mechanism of FSN action. The primary aim was to assess the feasibility and safety of this protocol, guiding future trials and their sample size calculations. ⋯ FSN reduces pain and improves joint function in knee osteoarthritis, while also enhancing blood flow and oxygenation in the vastus lateralis muscle of the affected side. Further revisions of this protocol are warranted based on our insights.

Adolescent overweight and obesity are growing public health concerns in developing nations like Ethiopia. They are closely linked to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases, a deterioration in health-related quality of life, subpar academic performance, and a decline in social and emotional well-being. There is, however, little research in this field. ⋯ A high maternal educational level, not eating breakfast and dinner daily in private secondary school adolescents and having a feminine gender, eating eggs, and not walking or riding a bicycle for at least 10 minutes continuously in public secondary school adolescents were factors associated with overweight and obesity. The extent of overweight and obesity was notably higher in the study area. Communities and educational institutions should work together to promote healthy lifestyle choices among adolescents, with a special emphasis on girls and students enrolled in private schools.
