The prognostic value of prognostic nutritional index and renal function indicators for mortality prediction in severe COVID-19 elderly patients: A retrospective study.
Identifying prognostic factors in elderly patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is crucial for clinical management. Recent evidence suggests malnutrition and renal dysfunction are associated with poor outcome. This study aimed to develop a prognostic model incorporating prognostic nutritional index (PNI), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and other parameters to predict mortality risk. ⋯ The bootstrapped area under the curve was 0.858, confirming model stability. A combination of PNI, eGFR, D-dimer, and LDH provides useful prognostic information to identify elderly patients with severe COVID-19 at highest mortality risk for early intervention. Further external validation is warranted.

Analysis of short-term ventilation weaning for patients in spontaneous supratentorial intracranial hemorrhage.
Prolonged ventilation is a complication of spontaneous supratentorial hemorrhage patients, but the predictive relationship with successful weaning in this patient cohort is not understood. Here, we evaluate the incidence and factors of ventilation weaning in case of spontaneous supratentorial hemorrhage. We retrospectively studied data from 166 patients in the same hospital from January 2015 to March 2021 and analyzed factors for ventilation weaning. ⋯ The group of successful weaning had 84 patients and the group of weaning failed had 82 patients. The patient's age, type of operation, GCS on admission to the Intensive care unit (ICU), GCS at discharge from the ICU, medical comorbidity was significantly associated with successful weaning, according to Student t test and the chi-square test. According to our findings, patients with stereotaxic surgery, less history of cardiovascular or prior cerebral infarction, GCS >8 before admission to the hospital for craniotomy, and a blood albumin value >3.5 g/dL have a higher chance of being successfully weaned off the ventilator within 14 days.

A study on the prevalence and prognosis of progressive pulmonary fibrosis: A retrospective observational study.
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a heterogeneous group of more than 200 diffuse parenchymal lung diseases with various clinical courses. Disease progression is one of the most important prognostic factors, and, the definition of progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) has recently been established. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence, risk factors, and prognosis of PPF among patients with non-idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in real-world practice. ⋯ Concomitant therapy of steroids with an immunosuppressants and home oxygen use are risk factors for PPF. PPF itself was significantly associated with high mortality rates. Risk factors for mortality were disease progression, older age, and lower FVC.

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperexcitability (PSH) is a group of complex syndromes with various etiologies. Previous studies were limited to the description of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the description of PSH after other types of brain injury was rare. We explored the clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of PSH after various types of brain injuries. ⋯ The etiology of PSH is complex. TBI may be the most common cause of PSH. Non-TBI may also be an important cause of PSH. Therefore, early identification, prevention and diagnosis are helpful for determining the prognosis and outcome of the disease.

Can the use of antithrombotic drugs be a predictive factor in the early diagnosis of bladder cancer?: A single-center analysis.
Hematuria is the most common symptom of bladder cancer (BCa). It is well-known that the frequency of hematuria increases with the use of antithrombotic drugs (ATDs). We designed our study with the hypothesis that patients using antithrombotic drugs who present with the complaint of hematuria and are subsequently diagnosed with BCa may receive an earlier diagnosis, leading to lower tumor grades and stages. ⋯ The effect of pathology stage and ATD use on predicting tumor grade was found to be significant. The probability of having a high-grade tumor was higher in patients not using ATDs compared to those using ATDs. In light of these results, we can state that the use of ATDs is a positive predictive factor in the early diagnosis of BCa, bringing along the chance of early diagnosis and treatment.
