Angiosarcomas are rare and highly malignant soft tissue sarcomas originating from endothelial cells lining the lymphatic or vascular system. While they predominantly emerge from (sub)cutaneous regions, occurrences have been reported throughout the body. The etiology of angiosarcoma remains elusive in most clinical cases. ⋯ The primary treatment modalities currently include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, but recent advances in targeted immunotherapy and gene therapy hold promise for more effective approaches. This comprehensive review delves into the potential etiological and pathogenic roles of foreign materials, such as metallic objects, biomedical implants, and biomaterials, in the development of angiosarcoma. Further research into the underlying molecular mechanisms could provide valuable insights for tailored management and developing novel targeted therapeutic strategies.

Pediatric incarcerated inguinal hernia: Traditional open or laparoscopic-assisted approach?
The objective of this study was to compare the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic-assisted surgery and traditional open surgery for pediatric incarcerated inguinal hernia. A total of 58 pediatric patients with indirect incarcerated inguinal hernia between January 2014 and January 2020 were included in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups; observational group who underwent laparoscopic-assisted surgery (n = 36), and a control group who underwent traditional open surgery (n = 22). ⋯ However, no statistically significant difference was found in the rate of postoperative hernia recurrence between the 2 groups (P > .05). In conclusion, laparoscopic-assisted surgery appears to be a safe and effective alternative approach to traditional open surgery for the treatment of pediatric incarcerated inguinal hernia. Its advantages include reduced trauma, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications.

This study aims to investigate the ability of bone marrow imaging using third-generation dual-energy computed tomography (CT) virtual noncalcium (VNCa) to differentiate between multiple myeloma (MM) with diffuse bone marrow infiltration and red bone marrow (RBM). Bone marrow aspiration or follow-up results were used as reference. We retrospectively reviewed 188 regions of interests (ROIs) from 21 patients with confirmed MM and diffuse bone marrow infiltrations who underwent VNCa bone marrow imaging between May 2019 and September 2022. ⋯ The AUC values for MM, RBM, and the combined group compared to the control group were all >0.99, with all diagnostic sensitivity and specificity exceeding 95%. VNCa bone marrow imaging using third-generation dual-energy CT accurately differentiates MM lesions from normal bone marrow or RBM. It demonstrates superior diagnostic performance in distinguishing RBM from MM with diffuse bone marrow infiltration.

In this research, we aimed to investigate the predictive value of the systemic immune inflammation index and prognostic nutritional index on mortality among patients with an endoprosthesis after a hip fracture. In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, a total of 915 patient files applied to our hospital between 2020 and 2023 with an endoprosthesis after a hip fracture were subjected to the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: alive (n = 396; 43.3%) and deceased (n = 519; 56.7%). ⋯ The predictive value of PNI for the 30-day mortality rate was statistically significant (AUC: 0.643; P < .01). For a PNI cutoff value of 34.475, sensitivity was 69.7%, and specificity was 51.1%. The PNI has predictive value both in estimating overall mortality and in predicting the 30-day mortality rates among patients undergoing endoprosthesis after a hip fracture.

Purpose of our research is to demonstrate efficacy of narrow interval dual phase [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) imaging in distinguishing tumor recurrence (TR) from radiation necrosis (RN) in patients treated for brain metastases. 35 consecutive patients (22 female, 13 male) with various cancer subtypes, lesion size > 1.0 cm3, and suspected recurrence on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) underwent narrow interval dual phase FDG-PET/CT (30 and 90 min after tracer injection). Clinical outcome was determined via sequential MRIs or pathology reports. Maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) of lesion (L), gray matter (GM), and white matter (WM) was measured on early (1) and delayed (2) imaging. ⋯ Other variables (L alone or L/GM ratios in early or late phase, all L/WM ratios) were significantly less accurate. Utilizing narrow interval dual phase FDG-PET/CT in patients with brain metastasis treated with radiation therapy provides a practical approach to distinguish TR from RN. Narrow time interval allows for better patient comfort, greater efficiency of PET/CT scanner, and lower disruption of workflow.
