The role of platelet large cell ratio in determining mortality in COVID-19 patients.
Inflammatory mechanisms have been implicated and have been subject to research in the clinical course of COVID-19 patients. In this study, platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR) has been examined as a novel prognostic and inflammatory parameter. A total of 1992 COVID-19-positive patients admitted to COVID-19 unit of Infectious Diseases were included. ⋯ As P-LCR was correlated with the severity of inflammation in all COVID-19 patients, it was significantly higher in those patients who died. Elevated P-LCR was considered to be associated with the risk of severe disease and death. This inexpensive, readily available test may be incorporated into our clinical practice as a novel marker of poor prognosis in addition to other valuable laboratory parameters.

Clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of adult brainstem gliomas: A retrospective analysis of histologically-proven 40 cases.
To illustrate the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of adult patients pathologically confirmed with brainstem gliomas (BSGs). Clinical data of 40 adult patients pathologically diagnosed with BSGs admitted to Beijing Shijitan Hospital from 2009 to 2022 were recorded and retrospectively analyzed. The primary parameters included relevant symptoms, duration of symptoms, Karnofsky performance status (KPS), tumor location, type of surgical resection, diagnosis, treatment, and survival. ⋯ The median overall survival (OS) of all patients was 26.2 months and 21.5 months for the median progression-free survival (PFS). Both duration of symptoms (P = .007) and tumor grading (P = .002) were the influencing factors for OS, and tumor grading was significantly associated with PFS (P = .001). Duration of symptoms for more than 2 months and low-grade are favorable prognostic factors for adult patients with BSGs.

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a common type of pain in clinic. Due to the limited effect of drug treatment, many patients with NP are still troubled by this disease. In recent years, complementary and alternative therapy (CAT) has shown good efficacy in the treatment of NP. As the interest in CAT for NP continues to grow, we conducted a bibliometric study of publications on CAT treatment for NP. The aim of this study is to analyze the development overview, research hotspots and future trends in the field of CAT and NP through bibliometric methodology, so as to provide a reference for subsequent researchers. ⋯ This study reveals the current status and hotspots of CAT for NP. The study also indicates that the effectiveness and effect mechanism of acupuncture or herbs for treating emotional problems caused by low back pain or postherpetic neuralgia may be a trend for future research.

Sepsis-induced myopathy (SIM) a complication of sepsis that results in prolonged mechanical ventilation, long-term functional disability, and increased patient mortality. This study was performed to identify potential key oxidative stress-related genes (OS-genes) as biomarkers for the diagnosis of SIM using bioinformatics. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that OS-genes might play an important role in SIM. CD36, GPX3, NQO1, GSR, and TP53 have potential as specific biomarkers for the diagnosis of SIM.

Lumbar disc herniation was regarded as an age-related degenerative disease. Nevertheless, emerging reports highlight a discernible shift, illustrating the prevalence of these conditions among younger individuals. ⋯ Accuracy assessment employs 2 methods: IoU and Dice, and the average accuracy of IoU is 88% and that of Dice is 96.4%. The proposed deep learning-based system showcases promising results in spinal canal segmentation, laying a foundation for precise stenosis diagnosis in computed tomography images. This contributes significantly to advancements in spinal pathology understanding and treatment.
