To identify the relationship between the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and clinical outcomes in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). ⋯ A low GNRI is significantly associated with poor clinical outcomes and might serve as a novel and valuable prognostic indicator among PD patients.

Safety of deer antler extract in children: A 12-week randomized controlled clinical trial.
Deer antlers have been used as strong tonifying medicine in Asian countries, especially for the growth and development of children in pediatrics of Korean medicine. The safety of deer antler in adults cannot be applied directly to children because of their physiological characteristics. To accumulate reliable data on the safety of deer antler in pediatric populations, well-designed clinical studies are required. ⋯ The research discovered that the DAE is safe in terms of ADRs and laboratory parameters under the conditions studied. Further studies are required to accumulate safety data about DAE dosage adjustment and potential interactions with other medicines.

Treatment outcomes of tuberculosis cases by HIV status in Haramaya General Hospital, Ethiopia: A retrospective cross-sectional study.
Tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection pose significant challenges to global health, particularly in achieving the target of ending TB. However, the impact of HIV status on TB treatment outcomes remains unclear, especially in eastern Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the treatment outcomes of TB cases by HIV status and associated factors in Haramaya General Hospital from November 15 to December 30, 2022. ⋯ There was a high treatment success rate among all patients with TB. HIV status was associated with TB treatment outcomes. Strengthening TB-HIV collaborative activities, providing patient-centered care and support, and frequent monitoring and evaluation are recommended to improve the TB success rate.

Older children over 8 years old are at higher risk of elbow joint stiffness after treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures. The objective of this study was to improve the Slongo's external fixation system for treating supracondylar humeral fractures in older children. This would be achieved by increasing fixation strength and providing a theoretical basis through finite element analysis and mechanical testing. ⋯ The K values of rotation angle-torque tests and front and rear displacement-stress tests were calculated for Groups A and B, with Group B showing higher values than Group A. The results of this study supported the significantly enhanced biomechanical reliability and stability of fracture fixation in Group B, which utilized the modified Slongo's external fixation (Kirschner wire tail fixation). This optimized method provides a new choice for the clinical treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures in older children, backed by both clinical evidence and theoretical basis.

The present study aimed to establish an effective prognostic nomogram model based on the Naples prognostic score (NPS) for resectable thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). A total of 277 patients with ESCC, who underwent standard curative esophagectomy and designated as study cohort, were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into different groups, including NPS 0, NPS 1, NPS 2, and NPS 3 or 4 groups, for further analysis, and the results were validated in an external cohort of 122 ESCC patients, who underwent surgery at another cancer center. ⋯ The calibration curves showed good consistency in predicting the 5-year survival between the actual observation and nomogram predictions. The decision curve also showed a higher potential of the clinical application of predicting the 5-years OS of the proposed nomogram model as compared to that of the 7th edition of TNM staging systems. The preoperative NPS-based nomogram model had a certain potential role for predicting the prognosis of ESCC patients.
