Emergency surgeries are linked with increased morbidity and reduced life expectancy, often associated with low socioeconomic status, limited access to healthcare, and delayed hospital admissions. While the influence of socioeconomic status on elective surgery outcomes is well-established, its impact on emergency surgeries, including ostomy creation and closure, is less clear. This study aimed to explore how the pandemic and socioeconomic status affect emergency ostomy procedures, seeking to determine which has a greater effect. ⋯ A high socioeconomic status was significantly associated with early hospital admission for ostomy closure, and lower probability of mortality. More metastases and perforations were observed during the pandemic period and mortality was increased during pandemic and in patients without ostomy closure. The socioeconomic status lost its effect in cases of emergency ostomy creation and had no impact on length of hospital stay in either the pre-pandemic or pandemic period.

The aim of this study is to delineate the distinctive high-resolution computed tomography features of pulmonary cryptococcosis in non-HIV-infected patients. This retrospective analysis encompasses high-resolution computed tomography scans from 58 patients with histologically confirmed pulmonary cryptococcosis, focusing on the diagnostic challenges and the factors that lead to misdiagnosis. Analysis of computed tomography scans from these patients indicated that nodular or mass-like presentations were evident in 32 cases (55.2%), consolidation presentations in 7 cases (12.1%), and mixed presentations in 19 cases (32.8%). ⋯ Moreover, 24 cases (41.4%) exhibited necrosis or cavitation, mediastinal lymphadenopathy was noted in 6 cases (10.3%), and pleural effusion was present in 5 cases (8.6%). Lesions were devoid of calcification. Pulmonary cryptococcosis ought to be contemplated in the differential diagnosis when computed tomography imaging exhibits patterns including, but not limited to, lower lobe and peripheral distribution, a broad base abutting the pleura, clustered growth with a propensity for fusion, air bronchogram within lesions, and peripheral halo sign.

Clinical profiles and treatment outcomes of outpatients with interstitial lung disease and mechanic's hands: A retrospective and observational cohort.
Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, especially antisynthetase syndrome, often appear outside of the muscles as interstitial lung disease (ILD). Another typical finding is the presence of mechanic's hands. The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical, functional, tomographic, and serological data of patients with ILD and mechanic's hands and their response to treatment and survival rates. ⋯ After a median follow-up of 58 months, 48 patients remained alive and three died. Patients with honeycombing on high-resolution chest tomography (log-rank = 34.65; P < .001) and a decrease in FVC ≥5% (log-rank = 18.28, P < .001) had a poorer survival rate. Patients with ILD and mechanic's hands respond well to immunosuppressive treatment.

Few studies have examined the risk factors associated with the type of acute respiratory failure (ARF) in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study evaluated the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients hospitalized for acute exacerbation of COPD based on the type of ARF. The medical charts of hospitalized patients with acute exacerbation of COPD between 2016 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. ⋯ There was no difference in mortality and readmission rates between the type 1 and type 2 ARF groups. In conclusion, patients with type 1 ARF rather than type 2 ARF had higher mortality and readmission rates than those without ARF. The prognoses of patients with type 1 and type 2 ARF were similar.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by high incidence, prolonged course, significant health damage, and a heavy societal burden. Understanding the history and content of CKD research is crucial to further its recognition and management, in addition to reducing its individual and societal burdens. This study aimed to assess the management history of CKD to provide a foundation for clinical medical staff to systematically understand its evolution. ⋯ The CKD research journey is comprised of 3 stages, the contents of which form an interconnected research model. Future research should focus on the establishment of management models and the application of intelligent management tools. Furthermore, this work can serve as a reference for the further expansion of research in this field and in improving its management.
