Does This Child With High Blood Pressure Have Secondary Hypertension?: The Rational Clinical Examination Systematic Review.
Guidelines recommend that all children and adolescents with hypertension undergo evaluation for secondary causes. Identifying clinical factors associated with secondary hypertension may decrease unnecessary testing for those with primary hypertension. ⋯ Family history of secondary hypertension, younger age, lower body weight, and increased blood pressure load using 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring were associated with a higher likelihood of secondary hypertension. No individual sign or symptom definitively differentiates secondary hypertension from primary hypertension.

Approximately 1 in 6 youth in the US have a mental health condition, and suicide is a leading cause of death among this population. Recent national statistics describing acute care hospitalizations for mental health conditions are lacking. ⋯ Between 2009 and 2019, the number and proportion of pediatric acute care hospitalizations due to mental health diagnoses increased significantly. The majority of mental health hospitalizations in 2019 included a diagnosis of attempted suicide, suicidal ideation, or self-injury, underscoring the increasing importance of this concern.
