Minimal information exists regarding the consistency and correlates of dentists' implementation of risk mitigation strategies when prescribing opioids, including risk screening, prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) use, and patient education. ⋯ When opioid prescribing is indicated, risk of misuse and diversion may be mitigated by consistent PDMP use and provision of patient education. Dental education in this arena is needed.

The objective of this study was to identify specific factors (sex, race or ethnicity, and health care provider type) associated with patient receipt of an opioid prescription after a dental diagnosis. ⋯ Dentists are providing substantially less opioid prescriptions compared to their medical colleagues for pain treatment following a dental diagnosis in the Medicaid population. When considering pain management for dental and related conditions, dentists should continue with conservative prescribing practices as recommended.

Perioperative bleeding complications of ticagrelor, a newer oral antiplatelet, has not been studied in dentistry. Studies about bleeding status after oral surgical procedures in patients receiving continued antiplatelet therapy are also limited. We investigated the effects of continuing aspirin, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, or dual antiplatelet therapy on the frequency of bleeding events in patients undergoing tooth extractions or minor oral surgery. ⋯ In accordance with recommendations from published studies and guidelines, antiplatelet medications, including dual antiplatelet therapy, should not be interrupted for tooth extractions or minor oral surgery.

Benefits and harms of capnography during procedures involving moderate sedation: A rapid review and meta-analysis.
Patient safety is a priority in dentistry. Evaluating the benefits and harms associated with the addition of capnography to standard monitoring during moderate sedation for adult patients in the dental practice setting is needed. ⋯ Adding capnography to standard monitoring of adults during moderate sedation may reduce the risk of developing hypoxemia, increase detection of adverse respiratory events, and is not associated with additional harms. These findings suggest routine use of capnography during moderate sedation has the potential to reduce adverse anesthetic outcomes in dental practice.
