Comparison between meloxicam and transdermally administered fentanyl for treatment of postoperative pain in dogs undergoing osteotomy of the tibia and fibula and placement of a uniplanar external distraction device.
To compare the efficacy of meloxicam administered perioperatively with transdermal administration of fentanyl via a patch placed preoperatively in dogs undergoing orthopedic surgery. ⋯ Perioperative administration of meloxicam or preoperative placement of a transdermal fentanyl patch provided effective and similar postoperative analgesia in dogs undergoing orthopedic surgery. However, because of its anti-inflammatory effects, treatment with meloxicam reduced the degree of lameness and resulted in rapid functional recovery of the limb.

National survey of owner-directed aggression in English Springer Spaniels.
To determine prevalence of owner-directed aggression and identify associated environmental and genetic factors in English Springer Spaniels. ⋯ Owner-directed aggression in adult English Springer Spaniels was associated with a number of environmental, sex-related, and inherited factors. To reduce the risk of aggression, prospective owners might seek a female, hunting-type English Springer Spaniel from an experienced breeder. However, because risk factors are broad and varied, there are limitations to the extent to which behavior can be predicted and further study is needed of the inheritance of aggression in this breed.

Comparative StudyEvaluation of hemodynamic measurements, including lithium dilution cardiac output, in anesthetized dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy.
To measure cardiac output in healthy female anesthetized dogs by use of lithium dilution cardiac output and determine whether changes in mean arterial pressure were caused by changes in cardiac output or systemic vascular resistance. ⋯ Results provide baseline data for cardiac output and cardiac index measurements during clinical anesthesia and surgery in dogs. Changes in mean arterial pressure do not necessarily reflect corresponding changes in cardiac index.

Comparative StudyEpidural administration of fixed volumes of xylazine and lidocaine for anesthesia of dairy cattle undergoing flank surgery.
A modified method for epidural anesthesia in standing cattle undergoing flank surgery in which fixed volumes of xylazine and lidocaine were injected is described, along with results in 18 cattle. A Tuohy needle was inserted into the L1-2 intervertebral space from a dorsal midline approach, positioning of the needle tip in the epidural space was confirmed by use of the hanging drop technique, the needle was slowly advanced 7 to 10 mm to penetrate the epidural fat, and the anesthetic solution was then administered. In the initial 8 cattle, the anesthetic solution consisted of 1 mL of 2% xylazine and 4 mL of 2% lidocaine. ⋯ Surgery was begun 30 minutes after epidural administration of anesthetic; surgery time ranged from 27 to 276 minutes. Sedation and anesthesia were adequate, except in 1 cow that received the lower dose of lidocaine and became recumbent during suturing of the incision. The modified epidural anesthesia technique with injection of fixed volumes of xylazine and lidocaine appears to be an adequate method for anesthesia of standing cattle undergoing flank surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAnesthetic potency of sevoflurane with and without nitrous oxide in mechanically ventilated Dumeril monitors.
To determine the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane and assess the sevoflurane-sparing effect of coadministration of nitrous oxide in mechanically ventilated Dumeril monitors (Varanus dumerili). ⋯ The MAC of sevoflurane in Dumeril monitors is similar to that reported for other species. The addition of N2O significantly decreased the MAC of sevoflurane in this species.
