Causes and outcome predictors of traumatic brain injury among emergency admitted pediatric patients at Cairo University Hospitals.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global public health problem with significant morbidity and mortality, especially among the pediatric age group. Researchers are eager to find new diagnostic tools that might be useful for outcome prediction of pediatric TBI. ⋯ Falls, traffic accidents, and direct head trauma were the most frequent etiologies for TBI in emergency admitted pediatric patients. Child neglect and abuse were the most prominent predisposing factors. GCS and D-dimer were the most important clinical and laboratory markers predicting mortality. Further large-scale studies are needed to determine the prevalence of TBIs and to prove the prognostic role of the D-dimer.

Critical thinking and attitude of physicians toward evidence-based medicine in Alexandria, Egypt.
Evidence-based practice is important for developing countries and is expected to thrive in a questioning culture. Experienced physicians differ in the making of clinical judgements, which are often not based on evidence. Although this topic is of paramount importance to the quality of care provided in the university hospitals in Alexandria, little research has been done about attitudes towards evidence-based medicine (EBM), and the extent of physicians' skills to access and interpret evidence. ⋯ This study has identified a significant relation between critical thinking skills and having a positive attitude towards EBM among physicians in the university hospitals in Alexandria. The study supported the hypothesis that strategies that encouraging critical thinking in medical education could improve the attitude of physicians towards EBM. Adopting teaching methods that encourage critical thinking in medical education as well as including the concepts and principals of critical appraisal of scientific research in the syllabus of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students are recommended.

Impact of an infection-control program on nurses' knowledge and attitude in pediatric intensive care units at Cairo University hospitals.
Healthcare-associated infection is a prominent problem among patients in pediatric intensive care units (PICU) as it could result in significant morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and increase in medical care costs. The role of nurses is extremely important in preventing hazards and sequela of healthcare-associated infections. ⋯ There is scope for improvement in knowledge and attitude after educational program was offered to the nursing staff. Educational training programs should be multidisciplinary interventions in the era of quality control to help healthcare workers realize the importance of basic infection-control measures in reducing pediatric morbidity and mortality and improving the quality of care.

Patient safety in the operating room at a governmental hospital.
Patient safety is a fundamental principle of healthcare; it is a new healthcare discipline that emphasizes the reporting, analysis, and prevention of medical errors that often lead to adverse healthcare events. ⋯ To reach an optimal level of patient safety in the OR, it is recommended that the checklist should be implemented as part of the daily surgical routine. Identification of the hazards to which patients could be exposed and assessment of risks must be the ultimate goal in any OR.
