ReviewCost-effectiveness analysis of endovascular treatment with or without intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke.
Intravenous (IV) recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r-tPA) may not provide additional benefit in terms of functional outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who undergo endovascular treatment (EVT). In this context, the cost-effectiveness of EVT alone compared with its application following IV r-tPA has not been evaluated. ⋯ EVT alone appears to be more cost-effective compared with EVT and IV r-tPA for the treatment of AIS patients presenting within 4.5 hours of symptom onset.

Multicenter StudyTarget Ultra and Nano coils in the endovascular treatment of small intracranial aneurysms (ULTRA Registry).
The ULTRA Registry is a national multicenter prospective study designed to assess aneurysm occlusion rates and safety profiles of the Target Ultra and Nano coils in the treatment of small intracranial aneurysms (IAs). ⋯ This assessment of aneurysm occlusion rates and safety profiles in ULTRA Registry study participants demonstrates excellent safety and efficacy profiles for Target Ultra and Nano coils in the treatment of small IAs.

Compactness index: a radiosurgery outcome predictor for patients with unruptured brain arteriovenous malformations.
The goal of the study was to define and quantify brain arteriovenous malformation (bAVM) compactness and to assess its effect on outcomes after Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for unruptured bAVMs. ⋯ The compactness index quantitatively describes the compactness of unruptured bAVMs. Moreover, compact bAVMs may have a higher obliteration rate and a smaller risk of RICs than diffuse bAVMs. This finding could help guide decision-making regarding GKRS treatment for patients with unruptured bAVMs.

The New England Neurosurgical Society: growth and evolution over 70 years.
The New England Neurosurgical Society (NENS) was founded in 1951 under the leadership of its first President (Dr. William Beecher Scoville) and Secretary-Treasurer (Dr. Henry Thomas Ballantine). ⋯ The second section describes the early years of the NENS and profiles key leaders. The third section discusses subsequent neurosurgeons who steered the NENS and partnerships with other societies. In the fourth section, the modern era of the NENS and its current activities are highlighted.

Adverse radiation effect and freedom from progression following repeat stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastases.
The authors previously evaluated risk and time course of adverse radiation effects (AREs) following stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain metastases, excluding lesions treated after prior SRS. In the present analysis they focus specifically on single-fraction salvage SRS to brain metastases previously treated with SRS or hypofractionated SRS (HFSRS), evaluating freedom from progression (FFP) and the risk and time course of AREs. ⋯ RE on imaging was common after repeat SRS (30% at 1 year), but the risk of a symptomatic ARE was much less (11% at 1 year). The results of repeat single-fraction SRS were good for brain metastases ≤ 2 cm. The authors recommend an interval ≥ 6 months from prior SRS and a prescription dose ≥ 18 Gy. Alternatives such as HFSRS, laser interstitial thermal therapy, or resection with adjuvant radiation should be considered for recurrent brain metastases > 2 cm.
