Orbital reconstruction and volume in the correction of proptosis after resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reconstruction and orbital volume on the reduction of proptosis in patients undergoing resection for spheno-orbital meningiomas. Additionally, potential predictors of optimal proptosis reduction after surgery were evaluated. ⋯ Three factors were identified that optimize proptosis correction. First, all abnormal bone compressing the orbital contents must be removed completely. Second, rigid orbital reconstruction leads to improved proptosis correction, possibly by preventing frontal lobe and dural reconstruction from descending onto the compressed orbit. Third, aiming for an orbital volume slightly larger than the contralateral normal side leads to improved proptosis correction.

Randomized Controlled TrialVolumetric effect of shunt adjustments in normal pressure hydrocephalus: a randomized, double-blind trial.
MRI volumetry could be used as an alternative to invasive tests of shunt function. In this study, the authors aimed to assess the difference in ventricular volume (VV) before and after surgery and at different performance levels (PLs) of the shunt. ⋯ The consistent decrease in VV after shunt surgery and between PL 2.5 and 1.0 supports the idea that MRI volumetry could be a noninvasive method for evaluating shunt function in iNPH, preventing unnecessary shunt revisions. However, further studies on retest variability of VV as well as verification against advanced testing of shunt function are needed before a clinical implementation of this method can be performed. ReviewPatient-reported outcome measures in cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
The object of this study was to describe the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in cerebrovascular neurosurgery and to outline a framework for incorporating them into future cerebrovascular research. ⋯ There are only a limited number of disease-specific PROMs available for cerebrovascular pathologies and outcomes. Further validation of existing measures in independent cohorts, expanded incorporation of disease-specific PROMs in prospective trials, and the development of new PROMs specific to cerebrovascular conditions are critical to a better understanding of the impact of cerebrovascular diseases and novel therapies on patient lives.
