The feasibility of high-resolution arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion imaging of the kidneys was tested and proven at 3 Tesla using a flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) true fast imaging in steady precession (TrueFISP) technique. ⋯ High-resolution ASL perfusion images of the whole kidney were able to be obtained with good image quality by means of a 3 Tesla MR setting within a clinically applicable measuring time, thus providing an alternative to conventional perfusion imaging involving potentially nephrotoxic contrast media.

According to the WHO classification, cardiomyopathies are a group of diseases which are associated with myocardial dysfunction and can be classified either as primary or secondary cardiomyopathies. Genetic disorders have been identified in certain primary cardiomyopathies, however often the etiology remains unknown. The term "secondary cardiomyopathy" is used to specify diseases with the clinical indications of a cardiomyopathy, but can be attributed to a certain pathophysiological mechanism such as exposure to toxic substances, metabolic syndromes or systemic diseases. ⋯ Morphological and functional information can be achieved with a high level of accuracy and reproducibility. Tissue alteration of the myocardium can be detected assessing regional contrast enhancement, T1- and T2-signal intensities and chemical shift phenomena. This article describes characteristic aspects of MR imaging for the diagnosis of primary and secondary cardiomyopathies.

[Preoperative mapping of speech-eloquent areas with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI): comparison of different task designs].
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a well-established, non-invasive method for pre-operative mapping of speech-eloquent areas. This investigation tests three simple paradigms to evaluate speech lateralisation and visualisation of speech-eloquent areas. ⋯ The paradigms GV and GW visualise two essential aspects of speech processing: semantic word processing and word production. In a clinical setting with brain tumour patients, both, GV and GW can be used to visualise frontal and temporal speech areas, and to determine speech dominance.

[Infectious diseases of brain parenchyma in adults: imaging and differential diagnosis aspects].
Infectious diseases of the central nervous system have often to be considered in differential diagnosis, particularly in immunocompromised persons. Neuroimaging, specifically advanced techniques such as diffusion-weighted MRI and perfusion MRI contribute much to the differentiation of various brain infections and to delineation of brain infections from other, for instance, neoplastic diseases. In this review we present the imaging criteria for the most important brain infections in adults and discuss in detail differential diagnostic aspects.

Coronal ultra-thick multiplanar CT reconstructions (MPR) of the pelvis in the multiple trauma patient: an alternative for the initial conventional radiograph.
Multiple trauma patients with clinically suspected pelvic fractures often directly undergo a CT scan. However, the initial portable pelvis film (PPF) for further follow-up is then not available. This study examines whether coronal ultra-thick multiplanar reconstructions from CT data are similar when compared with the initial PPF, thus having the potential to serve as an alternative baseline image. ⋯ Coronal ultra-thick multiplanar CT reconstructions of the pelvis provide similar image quality and diagnostic accuracy compared to PPF and are therefore suited as alternative baseline image in multiple trauma patients who directly undergo CT.
