The treatment of posterior urethral strictures or bladder neck contracture associated with severe urinary incontinence after prostate surgery and failure of endoscopic treatments is controversial. We report our experience with a transperineal approach in two steps: end-to-end urethroplasty/anastomosis and subsequent artificial urinary sphincter implantation. ⋯ In patients with posterior urethral strictures or bladder neck contractures associated with severe urinary incontinence, an artificial urinary sphincter implantation as a second step allows verification of the outcome of a previous end-to-end urethroplasty or anastomosis and utilizes a dedicated operative field to reduce the risks of prosthesis implants.

Long-term intravesical adjuvant chemotherapy further reduces recurrence rate compared with short-term intravesical chemotherapy and short-term therapy with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma.
We present a randomised, parallel group, multicentre phase 4 trial comparing short- and long-term chemoprophylaxis with Mitomycin C (MMC) with short-term immunoprophylaxis with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) after transurethral resection of the bladder for non-muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma. ⋯ Long-term MMC significantly reduced the risk of tumour recurrence without enhanced toxicity compared with both short-term BCG and MMC in patients with intermediate- and high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma. Our data provide a rationale for maintenance intravesical chemotherapy in this population.

Efficacy and safety of TachoSil as haemostatic treatment versus standard suturing in kidney tumour resection: a randomised prospective study.
Elective nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has gained general acceptance as an alternative to radical nephrectomy. To achieve haemostasis without risk of local ischaemia and necrosis of kidney parenchyma after standard haemostatic suturing, we investigated TachoSil's efficacy and safety as atraumatic haemostatic treatment after kidney tumour resection. ⋯ TachoSil was superior to standard suturing in obtaining intraoperative control of haemorrhage and was as well tolerated as standard haemostatic treatment during NSS.

To perform a bibliometric evaluation of publications from European Union (EU) countries in the international urological journals between 2000-2005 according to their national origin and in relation to international context. ⋯ This study based on bibliometric analyses in urological journals demonstrated a feasible solution to validate and compare the contribution of the various EU countries towards the urological research.
