Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Intermittent catheterisation with hydrophilic-coated catheters (SpeediCath) reduces the risk of clinical urinary tract infection in spinal cord injured patients: a prospective randomised parallel comparative trial.
To compare the performance of SpeediCath hydrophilic-coated catheters versus uncoated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) catheters, in traumatic spinal cord injured patients presenting with functional neurogenic bladder-sphincter disorders. ⋯ The results indicate that there is a beneficial effect regarding UTI when using hydrophilic-coated catheters.

Risks and benefits of hormonal manipulation as monotherapy or adjuvant treatment in localised prostate cancer.
A round table meeting was held to discuss the role of hormonal therapy in localised prostate cancer. The findings of the group were that immediate hormonal therapy does not provide an overall survival advantage in localised and locally advanced prostate cancer. Bicalutamide can prolong disease free survival in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer, however it is important to underline that at this time it has not been shown to influence disease specific nor overall survival. ⋯ In patients receiving bicalutamide, there were increased cardiovascular side-effects, in addition to the high incidence of gynaecomastia. Early hormonal therapy has to be balanced against such side-effects and the inevitable appearance of hormone refractory disease in patients who progress after hormonal therapy. Consequently, patients with localised, low risk disease are not considered appropriate candidates for hormonal therapy used either as mono-therapy or in the adjuvant setting.

Photoselective vaporization (PVP) versus transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): a prospective bi-centre study of perioperative morbidity and early functional outcome.
To compare the early follow-up and perioperative morbidity of photoselective vaporization (PVP) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in patients (pts.) suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). ⋯ PVP provides excellent intraoperative safety, instant tissue removal, and immediate relief from obstructive voiding symptoms, similar to TURP. Early outcomes 6-months after PVP and TURP are comparable.

The aim of our study is to find out the good responders for estramustine phosphate (EMP) therapy in patients with prostate cancer. We have focused on the metabolism of EMP and studied the association between a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism in the catechol-O-methyltransferase gene (Val158Met of COMT) and PSA-progression-free survival in Japanese patients with prostate cancer treated by EMP. ⋯ The Val158Met polymorphism of COMT is associated with the PSA-progression-free rate of EMP-treated patients in prostate cancer.

Minimally invasive treatment of renal cell carcinoma: comparison of 4 different monopolar radiofrequency devices.
Radiofrequency Ablation is an investigational treatment option for RCC. The aim of our study was to test the ablation algorithms of four different RF systems in a standardized ex vivo perfused porcine kidney model. ⋯ The currently available monopolar RFA systems offer different specific technical features to control tissue ablation. Detailed knowledge of the specific characteristics of each RF system is necessary to provide a higher chance of successful clinical outcome by complete and reliable ablation.
