A qualitative study exploring barriers to a model of shared care for pre-school children's oral health.
To explore the oral health beliefs and practices of primary health care professionals which may act as barriers to the development of a model of shared care for the oral health of pre-school children. ⋯ This study has identified important barriers and possible strategies for the development of an integrated and shared approach to preventing dental caries in pre-school aged children. Clear and consistent oral health information and agreed roles and responsibilities need to be developed.

General dental practitioners' perceptions of the West of Scotland Cancer Awareness Programme oral cancer campaign.
The 2003/04 West of Scotland Cancer Awareness Programme (WoSCAP) oral cancer campaign was designed to raise public awareness of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer. The objectives of this study were to explore general dental practitioners' (GDPs) awareness and perceptions of the campaign, and its impact on local dental practices. ⋯ Most respondents were positive in their assessment of the campaign and reported an increased awareness of oral cancer among patients.

Revalidation of general dental practitioners in Scotland: the results of a pilot study. Part 2 - acceptability to practitioners.
To investigate the acceptablility of a pilot scheme of revalidation to general dental practitioners. ⋯ The pilot scheme appears to have been acceptable to the dentists in this scheme, given some caveats. The assessors felt that appraisal would significantly enhance any substantive scheme.

There are limited data on the utility of dental professionals in providing smoking cessation counselling in the UK. ⋯ Success rates in quitting smoking following smoking cessation advice given as part of a periodontal treatment compared very favourably to national quit rates achieved in specialist smoking cessation clinics. The dental profession has a crucial role to play in smoking cessation counselling, particularly for patients with chronic periodontitis.
