Comparative StudyEfficacy of the new cephalosporin ceftaroline in the treatment of experimental methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus acute osteomyelitis.
To evaluate the activity of a new cephalosporin, ceftaroline, in comparison with other antistaphylococcal drugs (linezolid and vancomycin) at projected human therapeutic doses against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and glycopeptide-intermediate S. aureus (GISA) strains. ⋯ The present study supports ceftaroline as a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of severe MRSA infections, including osteomyelitis.

Risk factors for mortality in patients with persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia in a tertiary care hospital in Taiwan.
To investigate the determinants of outcome in patients with persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia. ⋯ Congestive heart failure and metastatic infections were predictors of mortality. Isolates with decreased susceptibility to vancomycin that emerged during persistent MRSA bacteraemia were associated with mortality. Aggressive attempts to completely eradicate foci should be encouraged.

Usefulness of PCR for monitoring benznidazole response in patients with chronic Chagas' disease: a prospective study in a non-disease-endemic country.
This prospective study focused on the evaluation of antiparasitic therapy in chronic Chagas' disease, monitored by PCR. ⋯ We conclude that PCR is a useful tool for the early detection of parasite susceptibility to benznidazole and for the post-treatment parasitological follow-up of patients with chronic Chagas' disease.

Comparative StudyCo-trimoxazole versus vancomycin for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia: a retrospective cohort study.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of co-trimoxazole versus that of vancomycin in adults with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia. ⋯ Within the limitations of a small retrospective study, co-trimoxazole had a safety and efficacy profile similar to that of vancomycin and may offer an attractive additional therapeutic option for MRSA bacteraemia. A prospective, randomized controlled trial is warranted.

Flucloxacillin dosing in critically ill patients with hypoalbuminaemia: special emphasis on unbound pharmacokinetics.
To describe the total and unbound plasma concentration-time profiles for highly protein-bound flucloxacillin (95%-97% protein binding) in critically ill patients with hypoalbuminaemia and without severe renal dysfunction, and to use population pharmacokinetic modelling and Monte Carlo simulations to assess the probability of target attainment against an MIC distribution. ⋯ Administration of standard doses by intermittent bolus is likely to result in underdosing, and continuous infusion of higher doses is more likely to achieve pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic targets for the treatment of infections caused by the most common wild type of MSSA. Our data emphasize the importance of using unbound concentrations for determining dosage regimens for highly bound antibiotics.
