Interest in electronic cigarette (EC) use, or vaping, to help control weight is increasing. Many American Indian (AI) populations have a high prevalence of smoking, obesity, and EC use, but their perceptions of EC use for weight control are unknown. In Oklahoma in 2016, 375 AI adults who smoke completed a survey including perceptions about smoking and EC effects on weight control. ⋯ Most people who did not believe or were uncertain that smoking controls weight also did not believe or were uncertain that vaping controls weight. However, only a minority (29%) of people who believed smoking controls weight also believed that vaping controls weight. Among adult AI who smoke, both smoking and vaping were infrequently perceived as helping to control weight, but such perceptions were reported more frequently among those who ever used ECs.

Since the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), significant increases in the percent of insured United States residents has steadily increased. Studies have shown that there is an increase in preventative services usage and a decrease in chronic disease burden with increased access to insurance. However, very little has been studied about how the implementation of ACA has impacted utilization of health services and health status among Asian Americans. ⋯ The insured tended to utilize preventive health services more than the uninsured, but the types of insurance did not affect health care utilization. Gender and having a primary care physician were significant predictors in determining health care utilization. There is a need in this population for language-appropriate and culturally-sensitive education about the importance and availability of preventive services, which could improve adherence to preventive health services, thereby reducing health disparities.

While men are known to be at high risk of recurrent injuries from physical violence, the risk factors in African men have not been investigated. We conducted a matched case-control study to identify factors associated with recurrent injuries from physical violence in The Gambia. Eligible participants were injured male patients aged ≥ 15 years. ⋯ Results of the multivariable conditional logistic regression showed that for both the VC and NC groups, a polygamous family (ORVC, 3.62; ORNC, 2.79), > 8 family members (ORVC, 5.60; ORNC, 4.81), being brought up by a family relative (ORVC, 5.17; ORNC, 2.11), having smoked cigarettes in the past week (ORVC, 3.53; ORNC, 4.03), and perceiving no family support (ORVC, 1.12; ORNC, 1.19) were significantly associated with the occurrence of recurrent violent injuries. Furthermore, compared to the NCs, three additional factors of > 2 male siblings (ORNC, 1.84), low household income (ORNC, 3.11), and alcohol consumption in the past week (ORNC, 4.66) were significantly associated with the occurrence of recurrent violent injuries. These findings may fill in a knowledge gap that will be beneficial for developing effective intervention programs to reduce recurrent injuries from physical violence among African men.

Physical frailty and cognitive impairment are risk factors for adverse outcomes in older people with osteoarthritis of the knee (knee OA). This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and associated factors of frailty and cognitive frailty among community-dwelling older patients with knee OA in four representative cities of Thailand. Data composed of three parts, Part 1: Demographic data, Part 2: The assessment of frailty by Fried phenotype and cognitive function by MiniCog and Part 3: The assessment of factors associated with frailty. ⋯ The prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty was high in knee OA and associated with aging, severe knee OA symptoms, malnutrition, and functional dependence, whereas the prevalence of cognitive frailty was not uncommon in community-dwelling elderly. Physical activity rated by the GPAQ and self-rated methods were highly correlated. Self-rated physical activity may be used in community surveys of frailty.

Mystery patient drills using simulated patients have been used in hospitals to assess emergency preparedness for infectious diseases, but these drills have seldom been reported in primary care settings. We conducted three rounds of mystery patient drills designed to simulate either influenza-like illness (ILI) or measles at 41 community health centers in New York City from April 2015 through December 2016. Among 50 drills conducted, 49 successfully screened the patient-actor (defined as provision of a mask or referral to the medical team given concern of infection requiring potential isolation), with 35 (70%) drills completing screening without any challenges. ⋯ Approximately 95% of participants reported the drill was realistic and prepared them to deal with the hazards addressed. Qualitative analysis revealed recurring themes for strengths (e.g., established protocols, effective communication) and areas for improvement (e.g., hand hygiene, explaining isolation rationale). We conclude that mystery patient drills are an effective and feasible longitudinal collaboration between health departments and primary care clinics to assess and inform emergency preparedness for infectious diseases.
