Six year experience of external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy boost with a 1Ci (192)Ir source, and neoadjuvant hormonal manipulation for prostate cancer.
To present preliminary outcomes of pulsed dose rate brachytherapy (PDR-BT), external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), and hormonal manipulation, for prostate cancer. ⋯ Pulsed dose rate brachytherapy plus EBRT is effective in treating localized prostate cancer, with acceptable toxicity. However, a median 5-year PSA-PFS follow-up is required before providing a solid recommendation. This preliminary information supports continued use.

Final results of a Phase I/II dose escalation trial in non-small-cell lung cancer using three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy.
The aim of this study was to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) delivered within 6 weeks in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The impact of tumor volume and delivered dose on failure-free interval (FFI) and overall survival (OS) were also studied. ⋯ Dose escalation is safe up to 94.5 Gy in 42 fractions in 6 weeks in patients with an MLD 13.6 Gy or less. Higher doses are associated with a better FFI and OS for smaller tumor volumes. Involved-field irradiation results in a low percentage of isolated nodal relapses.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck treated by surgery with or without postoperative radiation therapy: prognostic features of recurrence.
This study sought to review a single-institution experience with the management of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck. ⋯ Combined-modality therapy with surgery followed by radiation to doses in excess of 60 Gy should be considered the standard of care for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck.

Integrin alpha v beta 3 antagonist Cilengitide enhances efficacy of radiotherapy in endothelial cell and non-small-cell lung cancer models.
Integrins alpha v beta 3 and alpha v beta 5 are important in tumor growth and angiogenesis and have been recently explored as targets for cancer therapy. Radiotherapy also inhibits tumor growth and affects vasculature. We explored the combination of integrin antagonist Cilengitide (EMD 121974) and ionizing radiation. ⋯ We conclude that radiation induces expression of alpha v beta 3 integrin in endothelial and non-small-cell lung cancer models, and that integrin antagonist Cilengitide is a radiosensitizer in proportion to the levels of target integrin expression.
