Diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in children for traumatic brain injury, which is known as the most important complication in trauma, require special attention. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in diagnosing skull fracture in children with closed head injury in comparison with computed tomography (CT) scan. The current prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on children (0-14 years old), who were referred to the emergency department of a general teaching hospital in Shiraz, southern Iran (January-March 2018), with close head injury and were suspected of bone fracture. ⋯ Conclusion: The results showed that POCUS with a portable ultrasonography machine, performed by the EM's physicians, have high diagnostic precision and can be considered a tool in the management of patients with closed head injury. What is Known: • Some studies have investigated the accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosing skull bone fractures in children with closed head injury, but before conducting this survey, no definite evidence recommended POCUS for skull fracture in children with closed head trauma in the ED. What is New: • POCUS with a portable ultrasonography machine, performed by the EM's physicians, has high diagnostic precision and can be considered a tool in the management of patients with closed head injury.

Initial reports on COVID-19 described children as largely spared from severe manifestations, with only 2-6% of children requiring intensive care treatment. However, since mid-April 2020, clusters of pediatric cases of severe systemic hyperinflammation and shock epidemiologically linked with COVID-19 have been reported. This condition was named as SARS-Cov-2-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and showed similarities to Kawasaki disease. ⋯ Cardiac manifestations are frequent, including myocardial and coronary involvement, and need to be carefully identified and monitored over time. What is Known: • Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has been described associated with SARS-CoV-2. What is New: • Patients with MIS-C often present with fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, and shock. • Cardiac involvement is found in a high proportion of these patients, including ventricular dysfunction, coronary artery dilation or aneurysm, and arrhythmias. • Management is based on expert consensus and includes cardiac support, immunomodulatory agents, and anticoagulation. • Long-term follow-up is required due to the unclear prognosis and risk of progression of cardiac manifestation.

Neonates and pediatric populations are vulnerable subjects in terms of health. Proper screening and early optimal treatment would reduce infant and child mortality, improving the quality of life. Researchers and clinicians all over the world are in pursuit of innovations to improve the medical care delivery system. ⋯ Conclusion: The advanced technology of 3D printing proposes a pioneering breakthrough in bringing physiologically and anatomically appropriate treatment strategies addressing the unmet needs of child health problems. What is Known: • The potential application of 3D printing is observed across a multitude of fields within medicine and surgery. • The unprecedented effect of this technology on pediatric healthcare is still very much a work in progress. What is New: • The recent clinical applications of 3D printing provide better treatment modalities to infants and children. • The review provides an overview of the comparison between conventional treatment methods and 3DP regarding specific applications.

Video discharge instructions for pediatric gastroenteritis in an emergency department: a randomized, controlled trial.
The aim was to evaluate if the addition of video discharge instructions (VDIs) to usual verbal information improved the comprehension of information provided to caregivers of patients who consult for acute gastroenteritis (AGE). We conducted an open-label, parallel, randomized trial, enrolling patients who consulted for AGE at a tertiary hospital. First, caregivers answered a written test concerning AGE characteristics and management. ⋯ Conclusion: Video instructions improve caregivers' understanding of discharge information. Trial registration: [NCT04463355, retrospectively registered July 9, 2020]. What is Known: • Poor comprehension of discharge instructions leads to incorrect treatment after discharge, increased readmissions and a reduction of caregivers' satisfaction. • Video discharge instructions are useful providing concise information independently of the patients' health literacy level or communication skills of the health care provider What is New: • The addition of video discharge instructions to verbal instructions improves caregivers' knowledge about AGE improved with respect to those who only receive verbal instructions • Video instructions do not add extra time to the emergency department visits.

Given COVID-19 pandemic periodic outpatient assessment of otitis-prone children regularly followed at our tertiary outpatient clinic of upper respiratory tract infections was discontinued since 9 March. In order to avoid leaving the patients to themselves just during the winter months, which are the most critical ones for these children, we kept in touch with the families of 102 children (mean age 41.4 ± 14.0 months) who had had a follow-up visit scheduled during the lockdown, and compensated with telemedicine assessment. This incidentally leads to the unexpected but not at all negative finding that a consistent clinical improvement had been occurred in most (82.3%) of children. ⋯ Conclusion: Our data document a global improvement of otitis-prone children in Milan during the Italian lockdown, as a fortuitous and incidental positive effect of the national lockdown. What is Know: • During COVID-19 pandemic in Italy any non-urgent medical activity including periodic outpatient assessment of otitis-prone children was discontinued. • Otitis-prone children experience acute infectious exacerbations mainly in winter. What is New: • Most of children reached by means of a telemedicine assessment during lockdown experienced a subjective clinical improvement; clinical assessment at the end of the lockdown revealed normal otoscopic findings in most cases. • Exceptional circumstances during COVID-19 pandemic had a fortuitous positive effect on otitis-prone children's clinical conditions.
