Recent policy initiatives in the United Kingdom (UK) have underlined the importance of public health education for health care professionals. We aimed to describe teaching inputs to medical undergraduate curricula, to identify perceived challenges in the delivery of public health teaching and strategies that may overcome them. ⋯ There is a need to increase the supply of well-trained and motivated teachers and combine the best traditional teaching methods with more innovative, problem-based approaches. Faculties need to share 'learning about what works' and teaching resources across medical schools as well as addressing a culture of neglect of teaching in some departments. Suggestions are made as to how undergraduate public health teaching can be strengthened.

Undergraduate ethics teaching: revisiting the Consensus Statement.
To determine whether the recommendations of the Consensus Statement published 7 years ago have been implemented. ⋯ The Consensus Statement has had a significant impact on the teaching of undergraduate ethics but, even 7 years on, not all its recommendations have been implemented fully.

Interviews are among the most familiar strategies for collecting qualitative data. The different qualitative interviewing strategies in common use emerged from diverse disciplinary perspectives resulting in a wide variation among interviewing approaches. Unlike the highly structured survey interviews and questionnaires used in epidemiology and most health services research, we examine less structured interview strategies in which the person interviewed is more a participant in meaning making than a conduit from which information is retrieved. ⋯ In this article we briefly review the more common qualitative interview methods and then focus on the widely used individual face-to-face in-depth interview, which seeks to foster learning about individual experiences and perspectives on a given set of issues. We discuss methods for conducting in-depth interviews and consider relevant ethical issues with particular regard to the rights and protection of the participants.
