Case ReportsSpuriously elevated automated platelet count in severe burns--a report of two cases.
Increasing use of automated analyzers in the hematology laboratory has resulted in enhanced accuracy of results. However, operators of automated analyzers and the end users utilizing the automated data need to be aware of factitious results which might be reported at times by these instruments. Case summaries of two patients with severe burns showing spuriously elevated automated platelet count are presented here.

Utility of dystrophin and utrophin staining in childhood muscular dystrophy.
To determine the utility of dystrophin and utrophin staining in the differential diagnosis of childhood muscular dystrophy. Fifty muscle biopsies of histologically confirmed cases of childhood muscular dystrophy, below 16 years of age, were stained immunohistochemically for dystrophin and utrophin. All the 30 muscle biopsies of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) showed all or majority of muscle fibers deficient for dystrophin and positive for utrophin. ⋯ All the muscle biopsies of patients with other childhood onset muscular dystrophies were positive for dystrophin and negative for utrophin. This study shows that dystrophin staining differentiates DMD and DMD carriers from other childhood muscular dystrophies and utrophin staining is of no added value. Utrophin up-regulation may compensate for structural deficiency in dystrophic muscle.

Primary thyroid lymphomas (PTLs) are rare neoplasms which in the past have been classified by various schemes. Clinicopathological findings of two cases which were diagnosed in the past one year in our institute are presented using the Revised European and American classification (REAL) for lymphomas. Both cases presented as enlarging neck masses in elderly female patients, in association with lymphocytic thyroiditis. One case was diagnosed as a MALT (mucosa associated lymphoid tissue) lymphoma while the other was a diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLCL).

Review Case ReportsPrimary liposarcoma of the omentum: a case report and review of the literature.
A case of round cell liposarcoma of omentum in a 45-year-old man is reported. The patient presented with abdominal pain, swelling and fever of 4-month duration. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomogram confirmed the presence of an abdominal mass, but the omental origin of the tumour was revealed only on laparotomy. ⋯ Histopathology of the tumour revealed a round cell liposarcoma. The patient expired 9 months after operation. Eight other cases of liposarcoma of omentum reported in English literature are reviewed.

Serum resistance of Escherichia coli strains causing urinary tract infection and diarrhoea in relation to alpha haemolysin production and O type.
A total of 46 alpha-hemolytic and 40 non-hemolytic clinical isolates of Escherichia coli were collected from pediatric patients with urinary tract infection and diarrhoea. Of 39 (84.7%) alpha-hemolytic strains and 27 (67.5%) non-hemolytic strains were resistant to 10% serum and there was no significant difference between urinary and stool isolates. ⋯ Production of alpha-hemolysin was more frequent in serogrops O2, O6, O8, O18 and O75. Thus, the resistance to human serum can determine clinical significance of Escherichia coli from different sources and alpha-hemolysin contributes to the virulence of Escherichia coli in initiation and perpetuation of clinical infection.
