Evaluation of high-fluorescence body fluid (HF-BF) parameter as a screening tool of malignancy in body fluids.
Automated body fluid (BF) analysis is gradually replacing the traditional methods of cell counting in all BFs. This study was done to analyze the high-fluorescence (HF)-BF parameter generated on Sysmex XN-1000 and study its correlation with the presence of malignant cells in the body fluids. A correlation between manual and automated differential counts was also done. ⋯ BFs can be reliably analyzed on automated analyzers. HF-BF parameter is helpful in identifying malignant samples but cannot be totally relied upon. If HF-BF%/# are above the lab-generated cutoffs, microscopy should be done. A complete validation study on HF-BF parameter in BF mode is desired to set the standards for the analysis of serious effusions.

Role of procalcitonin, Il-6 and C- reactive protein in suspected cases of sepsis.
To study the role of serum procalcitonin as a diagnostic biomarker in sepsis and to compare it with other sepsis markers (IL-6, CRP) in patients of suspected sepsis. ⋯ Procalcitonin along with CRP is a better diagnostic tool for sepsis.

Comparative StudyRandomized cross-over study and a qualitative analysis comparing virtual microscopy and light microscopy for learning undergraduate histopathology.
Virtual microscopy (VM) use in teaching and learning is increasing worldwide. However, there is a paucity of information comparing it to light microscopy (LM) in learning undergraduate histopathology. We investigated whether VM or LM had a higher impact on student learning and performance in histopathology. In addition, we investigated whether students preferred VM over LM, and whether VM use provided a platform to fulfill the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education core competencies. ⋯ Using VM to learn histopathology has significantly increased student learning and performance compared to using LM.

Case ReportsOrchitis: An unusual presentation of polyarteritis nodosa.
Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN), a systemic necrotizing vasculitis with multiorgan development, is generally restricted to the medium-sized muscular arteries. The varied initial clinical presentations of PAN can lead to a delayed diagnosis. ⋯ On review, the biopsy revealed features of necrotizing arteritis as seen in PAN with fibrinoid necrosis and giant cells, thus highlighting the fact that vasculitis due to PAN may have a localized presentation at the time of diagnosis. PAN should be distinguished from other causes of epididymo-orchitis and other vasculitis lesions, the most common being tubercular etiology in the Asian population.

Molecular genetics of BCR-ABL1 negative myeloproliferative neoplasms in India.
Over the past decade, we have moved on from a predominantly morphological and clinical classification of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) to a more evolved classification that accounts for the molecular heterogeneity that is unique to this subgroup of hematological malignancies. This usually incorporates mutations in Janus kinase 2 (JAK2), MPL, and calreticulin (CALR) genes. In this manuscript, we report the frequency of these mutations in a cohort of Indian patients at a tertiary cancer center. ⋯ We report frequencies of JAK2 p. V617F, MPL exon 10 and CALR mutations in 130 patients similar to those reported in western literature. These mutations carry not only diagnostic but also prognostic relevance.
