The value of specialty certification has been of interest to the profession and has been related to a number of key variables. The specific aims of this study were to determine differences between certified and noncertified ED nurses in perceptions of structural empowerment, anticipated turnover, intent to leave the current position, and intent to leave the nursing profession. In addition we explored differences in the key variables based on position (staff or manager) and background variables (eg, age, ethnicity, etc). Participants also were asked to indicate reasons why they intended to leave their current position and the nursing profession. ⋯ The study adds to our understanding of the value of specialty certification among ED nurses. Additional study is warranted to determine the benefits of specialty certification to additional organizational, professional, and clinical patient outcomes.

The review questions that are featured in each of the issues of the JEN are based upon the Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum and other pertinent resources to emergency nursing practice, pediatric and adult. These questions offer emergency nurses an opportunity to test their knowledge about their practice.

ED crowding is a public health issue, and hospitals across the country must pursue aggressive strategies to improve patient flow to help solve this growing problem. The logistics management program (LMP) is an expansion of the bed management process to include a systematic approach to patient flow management throughout the facility and a clinical liaison or field agent to drive throughput at all points of care. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an LMP on ED length of stay (ED evaluation times and ED placement times), as well as inpatient length of stay (IPLOS). ⋯ The results provide strong evidence to support the impact of an LMP on decreasing ED evaluation times, ED placement times, and IPLOS. Further exploration is needed to examine the program as a best practice, as well as its applicability for other facilities.
