Assessment of wrist motion is important in diagnosing and treating motion impairment after injuries to the wrist. Little is known of how finger posture influences the movement of the wrist. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of finger constraints on the maximum circumduction movement of the wrist. ⋯ Wrist mobility is facilitated by the synergistic motion of finger joints. Constraining fingers in static flexion posture reduces wrist flexion and ulnar deviation without decreasing extension and radial deviation. A clinical implication is that wrist motion should be assessed under standardized finger joint configuration.

To describe aspects of hand function in a total population of children with cerebral palsy (CP). ⋯ Limitations in hand function are common in all types of CP, but characteristics of the disability vary considerably between different CP subtypes. The MACS classification is useful to evaluate how well children can handle objects in daily activities. The House functional classification describes grip function in each hand separately; the Zancolli classification of finger and wrist extension and the classification of thumb-in-palm deformity according to House give an estimate of dynamic spasticity. All these classifications were shown to be useful in a population-based health care program, but further studies of the psychometric properties are required.

Volar and percutaneous techniques of screw fixation for scaphoid fractures usually do not involve direct visualization of the dorsoproximal scaphoid articular surface. Intra-articular screw penetration may be overlooked if the proper fluoroscopic views are not obtained. The hypothesis of this study is that the pronated oblique fluoroscopic view of the scaphoid is the most sensitive in detecting dorsal articular screw penetration of the scaphoid when compared with other views. ⋯ This study confirms our hypothesis that the pronated oblique view is the most important fluoroscopic image to obtain when evaluating penetration of the proximal scaphoid articular surface.
