The aim of this paper is to introduce the theoretical framework that directs the project. ⋯ Previous attempts to build comprehensive clinical decision support systems have disregarded important theoretical considerations hindering the success of these projects. Grounding a Decision Support System in a theoretical model of novice nurse decision-making will strengthen the utility and acceptance of the Decision Support System. Additionally, a conceptualization of novice nurse development is an asset to nurse educators, managers and scientists interested in improving clinical decision-making.

The aim of this paper is to report a trial to investigate the feasibility of the nurse practitioner role in local health service delivery and to provide information about the educational and legislative requirements for nurse practitioner practice. ⋯ This study has validated a research-based, iterative process for initial development of nurse practitioner scope of practice for any Australian specialization. Importantly, the study concluded with the scope of practice as a finding, rather than commencing with it a priori. Although general areas of health care need and under-servicing were identified at the outset, the process tested both the expansion and parameters of the roles.

This paper reports on the perceptions of experienced health visitors working with refugee families in Inner London. ⋯ This study identifies issues for further exploration, not least from the perspective of refugee women receiving health visiting services. Health visitors in countries receiving refugee women are framing their work with these women in ways that reflect Maslow's theory of a hierarchy of needs. This study suggests ways that public health nursing practice could be improved, and identifies issues for further study.

This paper reports the findings of a study exploring the relationships among patients' sense of coherence, coping ability and health-related quality of life following a critical illness. ⋯ Patients with a strong sense of coherence are likely to take an active role in shaping their own health outcomes. The results of this study will enable nurses to design interventions in the early phase of hospitalization to enhance patients' sense of coherence and coping abilities following a critical illness so that quality of life can be promoted.

This paper reports a study exploring the impact of advanced heart failure on the lives of older patients and their informal carers. ⋯ This older cohort of people suffering from heart failure appears to have needs not unlike those of patients with 'terminal diseases'. When people are diagnosed with more familiar terminal illnesses, in particular cancer, they are given ongoing explanations, reassurance and support. Similar professional input is needed for patients with advanced heart failure and their carers.
