Observational Study
A research protocol for testing relationships between nurse workload, missed nursing care and neonatal outcomes: the neonatal nursing care quality study.
We describe an innovative research protocol to test the role of missed nursing care as a mediator of the association between nurse workload and patient outcomes in the neonatal intensive care unit. ⋯ Missed care may explain the effects of nurse workload on patient outcomes. This research will generate preliminary evidence regarding the causal relationships among nurses' workloads, missed care and infant outcomes that we will confirm in a future multi-site study.

This study explores the current state of collaboration and communication between nurses and general practitioners in nursing homes, as well as needs and expectations of nursing home residents and their families. Finally, we aim to develop a new model of collaboration and communication. ⋯ The study is expected to uncover deficits and opportunities in interprofessional collaboration in nursing homes. It provides deeper understanding of the concepts of all involved person groups and adds important clues for the interaction between professionals and older people in this setting.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
A randomized controlled trial of fentanyl in the pre-emptive treatment of pain associated with turning in patients under mechanical ventilation: research protocol.
To compare the effectiveness and safety of fentanyl with placebo as pre-emptive treatment for pain associated with turning in patients in intensive care units. ⋯ If pre-emptive fentanyl is more effective than placebo and reasonably safe, the results of the current study may change nursing attitude in managing turning in critically ill patients. As a consequence, pain may be decreased during this nursing procedure.

This study sought to analyse relationships between nurse staffing and patients' length of stay in acute care units and to determine whether non-linear relationships exist between variables. ⋯ Flexible nurse staffing is preferable to fixed staffing to provide patients with shorter length of stay in acute care units. In the present research, the Bayesian method revealed non-linear relationships between nurse staffing and patient and care outcomes.

To investigate nurses' attitudes towards and accommodations of patients' expressions of religiosity and faith in dementia care. ⋯ Nurses and care workers were uncertain and lacked knowledge of the patients' expressions of religiosity and faith in terms of both their substance and their function. Nurses struggled with ambivalent feelings about patients' religious expressions and with unclear understanding of the significance of religiosity. These challenges compromised person-centred and holistic care on several occasions.
